Fowey Branch
Alan Peters
Hi Keith,
The night of Saturday 10th August 2019 saw a ballast drop on the Fowey branch utilising side tippers to stock pile ballast, Colas Rail Freight provided the motive power with 66848 leading back to Westbury and 66850 on the rear of the top and tail formation. The previous weekend Freightliner provided the motive power for the same drop for future engineering work when the Railvac will visit the Fowey branch. The train departed in glorious sunshine to reach Westbury in a torrential thunderstorm!
                   Alan Peters
Many thanks indeed Alan.

An appeal
Mike Frackiewicz
As Archivist for the Maunsell Locomotive Society, would it be possible to put an appeal in your magazine and/or website for any photos/spotting notes taken back in the days of steam of the following locomotives: S15 30847, Us 31618 and 31638, Q 30541 and V 30928 Stowe. The S15 in particular spent many years in the West Country working out of both Exmouth Junction and Salisbury. All 5 engines reside  at the Bluebell Railway. I would add that I am always happy to cover any reasonable costs.
     Best wishes,  Mike Frąckiewicz

Hayle Heritage Centre
Something to do.
So far August hasn't been a very summery month - not really weather for the beaches.  If however, you are interested in a real quality museum the Heritage Centre at Hayle is the place for you. Situated in Foundry Square  close by Hayle Viaduct there is parking close by at ASDA and the station is not two hundred yards away - the buses on the T1 and T2 routes are even closer. The opening hours until the end of August are Tuesday to Saturday 11.00 to 16.00 and until the end of September Tuesday to Friday 11,00 to 16.00. You can be sure of a warm welcome from the stewards on duty. You'll find much of interest of Hayle's Industrial history right from prehistoric times to the present day.  There are also many photographs of the railway scene. WELL  WORTH A  VISIT.

The outside of the Heritage Centre which is situated on the first floor of the white building nearest to the camera. Access is either by a stairway or a lift. The railway viaduct is just out of sight to the left of the picture. The clock on the tower above the centre has faces - here showed of which three showed London time and the fourth face showed Cornish Time - a difference of twenty minutes. (Information from the excellent 'Hayle Trail Guide' available at £4 from the centre).

A view along Penpol Terrace showing the Hayle Railway which later became a branch off the main line. The current main line passes over Hayle viaduct, the current Hayle station being off to the left - the original Hayle station being just beyond the viaduct at this level. An excellent aerial view, again courtesy the Hayle Heritage Centre. This view is taken at low tide looking down the estuary. The main line can be seen crossing the viaduct with the current Hayle station on the right. The Hayle Railway, from Redruth, followed the north bank of Copperhouse Creek coming in on the right of this picture. It then turned south to continue on the banks of the harbour alongside Penpol Terrace to the original Hayle station which lay below the viaduct on the inside of the corner at Foundry Square. Hayle Heritage Centre is situated towards the left hand end of the viaduct. The approach for vessels to the harbour was treacherous with many a ship grounding on the 'bar' of sand and rock at the entrance. Another curious feature here are the bays formed in the harbour wall to allow ships to berth really close - these two bays can clearly be seen in this view.

This excellent pictorial guide to Hayle is available at the Heritage Centre price £4. The cover picture on this guide also serves well to show the route of the Hayle Railway from Redruth which passed along what is now King George V walk on the far side of Copperhouse Creek to cross the entrance to this creek and then run down on the far side of the harbour alongside Penpol Terrace to its own passenger station situated on the curve almost beneath the viaduct. Hayle Heritage Centre with its clock tower can just be discerned.

Dawlish

Dawlish looking decidedly quiet on a summer Sunday afternoon. It's high tide with only a small swell to brush against the sea wall. Once the school holidays are over the contractors will return this will become a work site once more as the sea wall is raised. 11th August 2019. Copyright Clive Smith.
