The St Ives Branch
Roger Salter
As it was the first sunny morning for a long time ,I ventured to the St.Ives Branch, finding along the Lelant Golf Course the foot crossing has been chained & padlocked, to get a shot from the other side it is a long r/about detour back over the bridge. Not sure that I ever heard about this?

Eastleigh News
Kevin Jenkin

Kevin on his daily jaunt took the following. Here are some snaps of the track replacement work at Eastleigh on Saturday. Southampton was basically closed to trains over the weekend which was pretty unusual. The Eastleigh damaged section has not been fully replaced (presumably another weekend closure to come), but Winchester to Southampton trains can now stop at Eastleigh platform 2 once again. Now that that facility is available, us commuters have another round of guards strikes to look forward to in March!!!

45147 has arrived at platform 4 at Penzance station on the 13th October 1984 with the 07.50 Bristol TM - Penzance formed of load 6. The return working back to Bristol TM at 13.45 would be formed of additional parcel vans from the sidings behind the peak, increasing the load to 13 for a tidy thrash up the Cornwall main line and over the Devon banks.

A gem at St Erth
David Cook

Please find attached a photograph which your members might find of interest.
As you know I have spent the last few years tracking down photographs of 4566 (during her pre-preservation life) and this is one I have acquired as I thought it summed up what working on a branch line was all about. The Driver drinking tea whilst passing the time of day with station staff before setting off with the next train for St. Ives

You will note that the engine featured is in actual fact 4571 however, the engine shunting in the background is 4566, hence my interest.

The photograph is another taken by the late Peter Gray (copyright Transport Treasury) and is dated 6/2/1960, a few months before 4566 went to Newton Abbot for a light casual repair (being the last locomotive overhauled in the works prior to closure to steam)

As with previous submissions I have forwarded to the Cornwall Railway Society could I ask if any of your members might be able to put names to the three men in the photograph.

Best Wishes, David Cook (4566 Group)
