Sent 2014, received 2013 - time travelling!!

31/12/2013

These pictures were received at 20.36 on 31st December 2013.  At the time they were sent from New Zealand, where the contributor lives, they were already into 2014!!                         Can anybody help or supply answers to the questions below?

No doubt about where it is! St Erth station. A 2mm/foot fine scale model under construction by Steve Martin Copyright
Steve Martin writes - The photos from Sid Geake on your website are of huge value to me, giving me details from the rear section of he goods yards that I have not been able to uncover in 8 years of modelling and research. Thank you so much for making them available.
I would be most interested in making contact with members from the region who were hopefully around the area during the late fifties.
I'm still researching the eastern end of the goods yard and have only vague details of the architecture that was there including a significant "bungalow" type building situated at the end of the main loading dock, which I believe was for the yard staff.
I'm also modelling some of the immediate surrounding area including parts of the dairy factory, the row of houses on the rise adjacent to the goods yard and the cottages opposite the station entrance. These have been removed (probably late 60's) and it looks like a hotel/motel occupies that area now. I have got any information on the previous building yet.
I have enclosed a few photos of the first module to date - I'm dedicated to building a faithful reproduction and are building up and converting stock of the period to fine scale standards. The footbridge is currently under construction and is in situ in the photo.  We'll see what response we have - KJ

Beyond the reach of railways lies Mousehole - we celebrate the end of 2013 with this colourful picture by Roger Winnen and wish you all all the very best for 2014 and look forward to your photographs.

The end of the Penlee Quarry Tramway         Roger Winnen

31/12/2013

This picture taken beyond miniature turntable or turnplate very near the end of the pier at Newlyn  shows an out of line disconnected length of track at the very end of the pier.  Can anybody tell us why this was there and how the wagons were unloaded into waiting ships?

Our oldest railtour picture in our area yet.

Mike Roach has provided this excellent record of an early railtour at Penzance - has anyone else any more earlier or later railtours please.

A WISH HAS COME TRUE.                                                               Thanks to  Graham Bowden a Signaller with Network Rail

30/12/2013

Those of you who have read Roger Winnen's report of the 27th December 2013 concerning the temporary changes to the trackwork just to the north of Crediton will be wondering what went on out of the common enthusiasts camera range.  Roger tried to get pictures through the windows of the Class 150 he caught but no luck.  The 'slewing' took place too far away from Yeoford platform for shots from there.  However, here a professional railwayman came to our rescue in the shape of Graham Bowden.  It is with many thanks to Graham that we bring you these pictures.  Any other pictures of operations elsewhere on the network by professionals would be very much appreciated.

A Sad End to the Festive Season on the South Devon

30/12/2013

We are sorry to report that during the period between the last Santa train on the 23rd and first train that was due to depart Buckfastleigh on the 26th the SDR has suffered a Landslip between Buckfastleigh and Staverton that has blocked the line and brought a premature end to their 2013 running season.  We wish them well with the clearance works and a speedy resumption of services in 2014.

Penlee Quarry Pier                                   Roger Winnen

29/12/2013

The Penlee Quarry Railway closed in July,1972 being replaced by a conveyor belt system.  The railway went to the Newlyn South Pier from the Quarry adjacent to the Mousehole road.   I was fortunate to gain access to the pier as repairs were being carried out on the Newlyn Christmas decorations situated on the pier, normally the pier is closed off even to the public for fishing, and within a few minutes of departing the gates were closed once more.   Many thanks for this Roger - your pictures are also placed in the Penlee Quarry in the Tramways & Light Railways section.
