The photograph is of 43027 on the 1010 from Penzance. Unlike SWT drivers which stop near the crossing signal, FGW drivers stop with only the leading power car on the platform. I have been on trains that have stopped at Reading West with only the power on the platform. Copyright David Tozer
Pinhoe was in deed a busy place for a while with no less than three HST’s in 31 minutes. How Network Rail must wish that they had a ‘Dynamic loop’ between Whimple and Feniton. Life would have been so much easier to keep trains running.
Problems appear to have started around 1130 with possibly with the 0805 Penzance to Paddington being heavily delayed..
At 1307 the 1258 Exeter (St David’s) – Basingstoke passed Pinhoe. The then very late running 0805 Penzance to Paddington arrived at 1316. This was held until the Basingstoke had cleared Feniton. The Paddington left at 1323 one of the few occasions that two trains were in the single line section between Pinhoe and Honiton which is permitted with the intermediate block signal at Feniton. Next to arrive was the the 1010 1A83 Penzance to Paddington at 1339 which had to await the down 1028 1C79 Paddington – Penzance. This train was held at Honiton to enable the up SWT Basingstoke service and the very late 0805 from Penzance, which at Honiton was now 116 minutes late !!! to pass.
