CDA's at Truro Some thoughts from Tony Hill

17/11/2012

No obvious reason for a CDA wgn to be on the main line west of B'gullow except possibly being used as barrier wgn for occasional MOD trfc (explosives) ..still passing to Truro in 1970's early-mid 80's latterly in a/b wgns & tripped ex SBZ yd....but very unlikely.

However if a down Clay empties train (ex Fowey) for Parkandillack Bch had got to B'gullow and the points (to Bch) failed the sensible/quickest way to clear the train and reduce delays to following trains would be to run to Truro ..because the CDA is near the stop blocks/east end of Truro yard suggests it was probably one of several such wgns.stabled on this sdg.

One further thought !

I think there was an exhibition in Truro Yard in the 80s-90s with some modern freight wagons and possibly it included a CDA ..note this wagon's blue paint is very clean !!

How many of the original 125-130 CDAs (modified MGR Coal hoppers) still survive ..anyone ?

Thanks for that Tony

Re CDA wagons. Only a very small number were converted from MGR wagons (HAA), firstly the prototype CDA 353224 in 1986 (retaining the same number it had as a HAA) which lead to the new build of CDA wagons 375000 - 375123 (124 wagons), these were all in traffic by 1988. Then in 1989 more wagons were added to the fleet and these were converted from HAA MGR wagons and renumbered 375124 - 375137 (14 wagons). The wagons recorded at Truro in 1987 wouldve been built as CDAs as the 14 MGR converts weren't until 1989. All the CDAs converted from MGR wagons are now out of use, the prototype 353224 is stored alone in 'River Road' at St.Blazey, with most of the others parked amongst the weeds at the front of the yard. Out of the 124 new build CDA most are still in traffic minus a couple accident victims.
