Keith, This is quite a well-known accident, although the precise details escape me now.
In essence, the Hall had passed the signal seen behind it at danger and entered the block section ahead illegally, where it collided with the train already in the section. IIRC it was claimed that the driver’s view of the signal was obscured by a person on the fire-escape on the side of the building (hotel?) in the bend of the line, tho’ I believe there was a spurious allegation that the fact of it being a young, attractive female played a part!
