Many thanks to Martin Duff who has kindly sent in details of the following link with the sad story of travel problems on FGW. Click here http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-29503523
We've been sadly lacking Lydford pictures up until now. Luckily for us Sid has been able to find some in his collection. This one taken in about 1962 looks across the station from the footbridge which served four platform faces. The nearest face being that of the GWR to Launceston form Tavistock South. The centre platform served the GWR services towards Tavistock and Plymouth via Yelverton. On the far side of the centre platform were yp services to Okehampton and Exeter. The furthest platform was for down Southern service to Plymouth. Copyright Sid Sponheimer. More pictures in the Plymouth to Okehampton section.
On the 5th October, 1964 six Cornish Stations on the main line were closed, Doublebois where little remains except a retaining wall. Grampound Road with remains of the up platform still visible. Chacewater Station with the down side, station buildings reconstructed in the early 1950s after a fire still exist. Scorrier with platforms still visible crossing over the former Poldice Tramway. Gwinear Road formally junction with the Helston Branch with the downside platform still intact with the crossing barriers replacing the crossing gates and Marazion Station still with its booking office now in private hands for holiday lets.
You don't need a loco to make a wonderful picture especially when you have such a scenic branch line at the St Ives Branch An article in the latest Railway Magazine states that most of DB Schenker 08 shunter fleet has now been axed from the beginning of September, engines being put into store for eventual sale or scrapping. The shunter operation will now be taken over by Class 60 or 66s allocated to the shunter pool. However First Great Western still have an allocation of Class 08s used at Laira and Penzance in the West Country for depot movements
Early October saw a move between Laira and Penzance. The new arrival being 08641 formally numbered D3808 Built January 1959 at Horwich and first allocated to Cardiff Canton 86A, replacing 08410 formally D3525 Built June 1958 at Derby and first allocated to Newton Abbot 83A Hi Keith On October 1st 2014 66152 waits to head up to Goonbarrow for the last time with 6G07 whilst replacement loco 66176 lurks in the background. The change over happened later in the afternoon at Lostwithiel Up loop. Another splash of October sun for you! 66176 skirts the inlet at Golant with 6P24 on 2nd October 2014. I was visiting Golant with Ivan Stewart a colleague from Milton Keynes, who wanted a black & white shot of the harbour. Sometimes the shots you don't plan too much can be a pleasant surprise! Cheers Craig Many thanks Craig. Morning Keith,
Last week Dairy Crest announced that it will close it’s factory at Chard Junction next year. Up and till the early 1980’s milk was regularly moved by rail. The working mostly passed Exmouth Junction around 1445 and returned at 1755. The train would often produce anything in the way of locomotives that Exeter had hanging around. Incidentally the sidings still exist. Regards Dave Many thanks David |
