Jarrod Cotter contacted us to ask if we could identify the location of this photo showing 50 046 with CDA hoppers. The train is passing over the river Fowey and Quay Street just south west of Lostwithiel station and it is called Lostwithiel Viaduct and is 277.51 yards long. Many thanks Jarrod.

The Cornwall Railway Society Visits North Devon on Saturday 6th June, 2015. A report by Roger Winnen8/6/2015
Fine weather was the forecast as members of the society left Cornwall for Barnstaple on Saturday morning. However on arrival it looked like rain was on its way, but it soon cleared and sunshine prevailed all day. Leaving the station our party headed for the connection around to Barnstaple Victoria Road crossing the five span bridge last used 45 years ago. A visit was then made to Braunton where many items of interest remains, then walking the trackbed to Wrafton, a visit to the former station with kind permission of the owner was made before returning by Stagecoach service 21 to Barnstaple to explore the Barnstaple Town Station. With time on our hands a short visit was made to Bideford before returning home. A most successful day was had by all, 150606a The Cornwall Railway Society Ramble to North Devon covered many parts of a long lost railway which closed 5th October, 1970 This bridge also closed after freight services ceased to use Barnstaple Victoria Road. Passenger services ceased on the closure of the line from Taunton on the 3rd October, 1966. Copyright Roger Winnen See more on our visit in Inside Pages Features Page
Hello Keith. Last Tuesday, June 2nd, the Looe branch was closed for most of the day after a woman managed to drive her car headlong down the steep slope and on to the railway line just a couple of hundred metres from Looe station. The location could be reached only by rail and the wrecked car was eventually retrived using a road-rail vehicle propelling a flat trailer down the branch. The attached photo was taken by my daughter from the other side of the river - hence the slightly fuzzy image. You are welcome to use it on the CRS web site if it is of any interest, copyright in this case belongs to Heather Buttivant. Best wishes, Derek. Many thanks Derek and of course Heather too. An additional picture has been received from Graham Mann Network Rail, many thanks for that also. Julian has sent us twenty one pictures featuring steam and diesel over the period between 1986 and 2007. These pictures are displayed in chronological order in the Features Section and also added to the appropriate galleries where possible. Thank you very much Julian. Here are a couple of Tasters - NOW TAKE A LOOK IN THE FEATURES SECTION FOR MORE
Thanks for your photographs Andrew
Dear Sir
What a delight your website is, the photographs, the information and depth of knowledge of the railway in the South West is truly amazing. Actually, Its only fairly recently that I chanced upon your site and that is due to me getting in touch with Bernard Mills someone I feel sure you know only to well. I had seen a book in my local library written by Bernard and having got in touch with him to buy a copy he was then kind enough to sign it and send it on to me and during our conversation he the Cornwall Railway Society. Your website brings back such happy childhood memories of family holidays spent in Plymouth during the late 1950's and early 60's. It is for that reason I am writing to you, I had my first camera, aged 11 at Christmas 1961 and the following summer we came down to Plymouth again and by this time I had become hooked on the railway. I wish I had had the opportunity (and the pocket money ! ) to take lots of photographs but I'm afraid I only have a few which, to be honest are not that good ! I naturally wish the shots I took were better but I suppose I was just learning to use a camera anyway and I just wondered if your Society would be interested in seeing them. I enclose one I took in the last week of July 1962 of 34035 Shaftesbury taking on coal at Friary Sheds I'm afraid I have no other details. As a matter of interest we stayed at a B&B in Carmarthen Road St Judes just across the park from Friary and just a short walk to Laira - I can tell you as an 11 year old train spotter it was the closest thing to heaven you could wish for. Yours sincerely Adrian James King Many thanks to David Tozer for being at Newcourt to view some of the first services on the first day of operation. The first service being the 05.57 to Exmouth and the next to call being the 06.30 return working. |
