The following quite recent shots of stone trains have been received from Roger Geach. Many thanks
Keith, I dug out some old pics of mine taken during my management of the Exeter SD remodelling icw the MAS scheme early 1985 The first pic is of the East end relaying the S&C from red cow crossing, red cow crossing excavations and the rest feature the relaying and realignment of the Salisbury line and down main from platforms 1 and 3 plus removal of the through line. Hope you find them useful Regards Graham Many thanks to Graham, who is Network Rail Operations Manager Plymouth. Through his camera we can enjoy pictures we could never take. Hello Keith, Whilst I found myself at Lostwithiel this afternoon (5th February 2015) , I was surprised to see a GWR signal box painted in Southern colours. It will upset some of those GWR types!! Regards, Mike Bojko Thanks Mike, it does however look very smart.
We welcome Roger Smith, a new contributor to our site, with this collection of views of a class 08 proceeding light engine from Tavistock Junction towards the dries at Marsh Mills and then later returning with a loaded train. Yes, welcome to Roger (Yet another Roger!) to our web site. There are many more pictures to come, I am sure. The line to Marsh Mills, at one time a station site on the line to Tavistock and Launceston was formerly on a direct line connecting to the main line to Plymouth at Tavistock Junction. In a process of rationalisation the route was changed to make an end on connection with one of the sidings in Tavistock Junction yard. 2nd August 1987. Copyright Roger Smith A most interesting shot looking into the branch terminus platform. It can be seen that the run round loop metals are still there they look disused. The metals were taken out of use 8th March 1964 and removed in November 1965. ( Ref. Tony Cooke). The water hose seems to have been removed from the water tank. From the Mike Morant collection. Thanks to Mike Morant we have a store of some rare photographs which we air from time to time. Time for another treat - this time at Liskeard. Many thanks to Mike Morant. An interesting assembly of road vehicles await outside the main station building which is situated on the up side. There are two buses waiting - one is on service 119, this one is off route it should have been on the Callington to Launceston run - perhaps it's lost! The other on service 71 St Cleer to Upton Cross. The bright red phone box also adds charm to the picture. Although this face of the building remains much the same, the side which overlooks the railway has been radically improved with a smart waiting area and buffet. Sid Sponheimer comments on the window almost hidden by the shed saying that at one time it was a very tall doorway and he was always intrigued by it as it was so thin but very tall and as it was in the original Brunelian building, I imagined folk of that era passing through it wearing those tall hats you sometimes see Brunel wearing! Picture from the Mike Morant Collection Passing through the main building brought one then, and now, to the top of a ramp leading down to a junction giving access to either the footbridge to the down platform for services to Penzance, or on down the slope to the up platform. The down station buildings have been replaced, the footbridge was also replaced in 2014. From the Mike Morant Collection. Good evening Keith A couple of pictures from the archives, all taken September 1962 917 the 3.05pm from Plymouth to Launceston heads north at Lower Goodameavy between Shaugh Bridge and Clearbrook Halts 918 the Launceston to Tavistock Junction freight, including Conflat wagons carrying containers conveying tins of rice pudding from Ambrosia at Lifton 919 the 4.30pm auto train propelling uphill from Whitchurch Down Halt to Grenofen Tunnel. After closure of the line three months later the Launceston to Tavistock Junction freight continued to run but from Lydford it headed south over the former Southern Route through Bere Alston. Best wishes Mike Many thanks Mike Hi Keith, Despite a cold start, the sunshine came in sharp today. The clay empties were late as a result of the loaded in being delayed by a points failure at Lostwithiel. I got to Golant by the skin of my teeth as the train tooted up for the slip-way crossing. I grabbed this image in superb light of replacement loco 66171. A view not possible if the train is right time (the sun is too acute). Cheers for now Craig As usual many thanks Craig
