According to rough calculations the distance as the crow would fly from Plymouth Friary to Plymouth North Road is of the order of 1530 yards, if one took the train the ride was about 2550 yards! One wonder how many took the train and whether it was quicker. The ticket was issued on Sunday 14 September 1958, the last day that passengers could board a train at Friary Station. However Southern Region passenger trains to Exeter Central and Waterloo continued to start from the station and run ECS to Plymouth North Road Station for a couple of years after that date.
New today that CRS Member David Horne has been appointed Managing Director of Virgin Trains East Coast from 1 March 2015. This is the same day that the joint venture between Stagecoach and Virgin Trains is due to takeover the franchise. David started his railway career in Cornwall in 1988. We congratulate him on his appointment and wish him well.
Morning Keith, The sun was out so I popped out to the site of the new Newcourt Station. I missed the down train passing the site and the up one was cancelled. Progress compared with the photograph I sent you last year. Dave Many thanks David.
Just before Christmas 2014 Trevor came across some new works where the Princetown branch crossed the Yelverton to Princetown branch. Since then he has tried to find out what is going on with no luck - DOES ANYBODY KNOW?
More pictures in our 'News Features page'. Hello Keith, I took the camera on the off chance the sun may be out. Alas as the 14.00 - 22.00 turn rolled on the watery sun was next to useless. I did grab 66164 in a deplorable condition passing with 6C53 in the late afternoon. Nice to see some fuel tanks on the rear too.
The loco passed the box 3 times in that shift, returning light engine as 0C53 from Riverside, then working the second portion of JIAs up as 6C55 around 9pm. Two class 70s headed west with a ballast working for the Newquay (night shift) and St Ives daylight run this coming Sunday!! Cheers Craig Many thanks Craig Good afternoon Keith . We missed the fiftieth anniversary of the closure of the Lostwithiel to Fowey line to passenger services on and from Monday 4 January 1965. Perhaps more significantly the date marks 50 years of the line as a freight-only line as far as Carne Point, Fowey. The line still carries china clay to Fowey Docks. In 2015 these consist of 2 to 3 trains each way every weekday, normally consisting of 38 2-axle CDA wagons hauled by a DB Schenker class 66 locomotive. Regards Mike Many thanks Mike - try looking at our Fowey branch pictures for coverage.
A nice picture of a 'Tamper in Transit', a view you don't often get unless you are in the know. Many thanks for this rare view Mick. I understand that they will be working on the St Ives branch this weekend.
