Many people pass this structure boarding trains at Penzance Station, but I doubt if many know its significance. In 1852 The West Cornwall Railway constructed the coke warehouse by burrowing under The Cliff which was known as the Eastern Promanade, this being for the storage of locomotive fuel. Permission was granted for the 'Warehouse' at a rent of 2s6d per year payable to the Penzance Corporation. The raised steps and platform are still visible today.
Many thanks to John Ball for the following early notice for the SDR
This is a must for any GWR man, with an absolute feast of branch line formations. Full details on South Devon Rly website, with presumably the usual disclaimers, but I have yet to see the SDR fail to produce the goods! Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 February - debut of 6412 ex works in BR green, along with visiting Prairie Tank No. 4566 from the Severn Valley Railway in BR black. Also resident GWR 0-6-0 3205 in BR lined green and diesel railcar W55000. Also demonstration goods trains. Monday 16 to Thursday 19 February- auto train comprising No. 6412 with W225W and W228W; possibly also extra services with the diesel railcar. Friday 20 to Sunday 22 February - Winter Ale Festival at Staverton plus; Friday - GWR 0-6-0PT 1369, LT livery 0-6-0PT No. L.92 (GWR No. 5786) and 6412. All three locos are scheduled to appear on goods as well as passenger trains. Also an evening photo shoot planned at Buckfastleigh (mainly shed) featuring 6412, 4566 and 3205. Saturday and Sunday should feature no fewer than five locos in steam: 1369, L92, 6412, 4566 and 3205, plus W55000, also D2246 as pilot at Staverton if required. Afternoon Keith,
A wild and windy day did not stop me visiting the Exmouth cycle way. Whilst Class 150/1's are common on the Exmouth line visits of the 150/9's are scarce. Possibly to provide extra accomodation for the Exeter Chiefs match at Digby later this afternoon 150926 worked the 1120 2F25 Paignton to Exmouth and 1253 2B77 Exmouth to Barnstaple. Oddly it stopped at Lympstone Commando in both directions. Any passengers getting off would have had extreme difficulty in exiting the station. The gates were padlocked and shut!!!! Why stop the trains I wonder. Possibly the first visit to the branch by 150926 since it was formed late last year. Oh the bridge in the foreground that the 150/9 is the one we talked about last year. Dave Thank you David Passing through the former station at Brent, junction of the Kingsbridge Branch on New Years Day 2015, it was noted that the former Signal Box which has stood on the site for thirty years since closure has been demolished. Any further information on this subject would be most appreciated.
Further to this appeal Clive P Smith has very kindly sent in the three pictures of the demolition of the box which took several days. Many thanks Clive. N.B. In the first two pictures we go back a few years, courtesy of Mike Roach and Chris Osment. A very festive atmosphere was had at the South Devon Railway today, with the dismal weather families enjoyed a ride on the train with hot mince pies reminding them of the festive season. An organ was in attendance together with a roundabout for the youngsters. Mince pies were served on the run from Buckfastleigh to Totnes the engine. Hi Keith, I am very grateful to Jenny Trennelly, Grand daughter of the late Leonard Hooper of St Blazey to share these lovely images of Len's time with BR. They show Len aboard a NB built Warship class D869 at St Blazey. The other shot shows a Western in disgrace having derailed at Burngullow. I dont have details yet, but I'm sure our friends on the Facebook Diesel Hydraulic group will have some facts. Jenny has given permission for these pictures to be shared with obviously full copyright to her & her family. All the best for now Craig Many thanks Craig and also please pass on the Jenny and family. Dear Keith Jenkin, I came upon your website when I was attempting to identify the location of two photos taken by my late grandfather, most likely pre 1910. He was born in Exeter in 1883 and was a keen photographer. I wondered if you could identify these locations. You are most welcome to keep copies of these images. Kind regards Allen Linning, Brisbane, Australia. Many thanks Allen I'll throw it open to the experts. Any idea of the locomotive classes? Both pictures have been adjusted as best as I can get them.
