A query concerning Truro station                Dave Anthony

11/8/2014

Hi.  Looking at the photo of Truro Station from the early twentieth century on the newspage, reminds me of something I noted just last week.
On the west end of the canopy over what is now the up-main (platform 3) there is now an extra curve in the end panel that was at sometime cut out. Looking back through the galleries, I see in gallery four for Truro, there is a photo from 1985 with the exhibition train in the yard, that also shows this cutout, so obviously it was done sometime prior to 1985, but the question is when and, perhaps more importantly, why. Any ideas?  Dave

Possibly to improve sighting of a signal??

Picture
140809zg Enlarging Roger's picture taken leaving Truro Station for Penzance the cut away portion of the end elevation of the canopy boarding is evident. Could it have been done to improve the sighting of the starter signal seen at the far end of the platform. Remember that the alignment of the main up line was originally serve platform 4 four and it thus comes in on a slight left hand curve to the platform 3. When was it done - well that's another question. Copyright Roger Winnen
Hello Keith, In Bradford Bartons Book  More Great Western Steam in Cornwall, that additional cut out from the canopy was not in the view dated 19th May, 1956 with 5972 Olton Hall,
However Peter Grays book shows the cut out in 1961 with a 57xx Pannier leaving, so it happened between 1956 and 1961.
All the best,  Roger                                Thanks Roger.
