At 11.30 this morning, in glorious autumn sunshine GBRf Class 66, No. 66750 was named “Bristol Panel Signal Box” in a ceremony headed by GBRf John Smith, Sir Peter Hendy and Gary Abbott (the panel manager).
Two photographs taken by my colleague Simon Ponter, the operations manager are included for possible use on the CRS page.
The opening of Bristol Panel at Temple Meads in 1970 resulted in the closure of 70 signal boxes all told. Items under the control of the box at the time of opening included 243 point machines, 163 controlled signals, 177 automatic signals, 556 track signals, 50 ground frames, 3 level crossings, 200 WR AWS ramps, 24 BR AWS indicators and 114 route miles.
There are presently four signalling positions in this traditional Western Region NX type panel and the first transfer of signalling control to Didcot is expected in May 2016.
