November Ballast Workings
Clinnick Viaduct Part One
Alan Peters
We are most grateful to Driver Alan Peters who brings us these pictures which are only possible to Railway Staff.
Here are
pictures of the engineering 24th / 25th November at Clinnick Viaduct, between Largin and Bodmin Parkway

Clinnick Viaduct at night, engineering trains were crossed wrong road in the possession to the 'up' line at Largin. The down line has already been lifted and the trackbed re-ballasted prior to re-sleepering, note the sleeper spacing attachment which will be used to unload the concrete sleepers by road-railer - Copyright Alan Peters

Once the engineering trains had been completed on site at Clinnick viaduct they were then moved down to the marker boards at Bodmin Parkway where Colas Railfreight 70808 is seen which will form the tail locomotive of 6C24 the 23:40 (SuO) back to Westbury on 25th November 2018 - Copyright Alan Peters

Launceston
to Redruth

Whilst this is not the train Roy Hart has written about it does show a prairie on a Launceston to Plymouth working. It is the 10.15 on the 27h December 1962 - A 'Gem' of a picture caught by Mike Roach Copyright
The 1015 Launceston to Redruth
In the 1950s and on into the very early ‘sixties, there ran this improbable service on summer Saturdays. Why? The only reason that I can unearth is that there was a gap in the Plymouth to Cornwall services at around the time that a Launceston train arrived at North Road. The train which arrived at North Road from Launceston consisted of a standard ‘B’ set, hauled by a 45XX. The 45XX came off and a 4-6-0 (Hall or Grange) came on, adding a further 3 coaches (corridors) –perversely, these had come in on an overnight train from Glasgow St Enoch!
In 1950s summers, the timetable would get very tied up sometimes, especially as long-distance trains all had to traverse the congested section from Taunton to Newton Abbot and this cinderella operation was not scheduled to be a connection for any particular train from London or the North –just for any one of them which happened to arrive.
Leaving North Road at midday, the train called everywhere except Dockyard Halt, arriving at Truro at 2-00pm.  Twenty five minutes were spent at Truro, while the 4-6-0 came off and a 45XX came on. Redruth  was attained (no doubt to the relief of all concerned, not least the occupants of the non-corridor stock) at 2-45. The prairie took the empty stock on to Carn Brea Yard, where it ran around and hauled what became the 3pm empty stock Carn Brea Yard to Truro. The stock, however, had not reached the end of its day: it then formed the 4-00pm  local to Penzance. On summer Saturdays anything could happen: on July 9th 1960, the train was hauled by 5098 Clifford Castle all the way from Plymouth to Carn Brea Yard!
This unlikely service ran for over a decade. I wonder if anyone ever rode from Launceston to Redruth?
