Bodriggy Bridge

Boddriggy Bridge carries the railway over a minor road at the eastern end of Hayle, Cornwall at 318m 77¼c. The deck of the bridge is constructed of steel battle deck troughing with the troughs possibly filled with concrete. The bridge is believed to have been constructed in 1908 when the line though Hayle was doubled, and is being replaced in a 10-day closure of the main line from 22.00 on Friday 4 March to 07.00 on Monday 15 March. When the line was quadrupled each side of and through Cardiff General Station in 1932-33 no less than 18 bridges had to be rebuilt. Some of them used battle deck troughing similar to Bodriggy Bridge and a contemporary report describes the troughs being filled with concrete using rapid-hardening cement so that waterproofing could follow on little more than an hour after concreting.
34 chains to the west of Bodriggy Road Bridge is Hayle Station at 319m 31c, although the actual distance from London Paddington is 297m 56c. The difference is accounted for by the fact that the mileposts go via Bristol which was the route travelled by all Paddington to Penzance trains up until 1906 when the current direct route opened. A few trains still travel via Bristol every day. A final thought – there are very few places on the rail network where the mileposts reach the figure of 300.
