National Highways, as if trying to make up for its destruction elsewhere, completed a splendid, sympathetic repair of the old overbridge at Christow in 2022. The bill was very nearly £70,000. Late on Thursday evening, a car hit a parapet and caused severe damage.

It wouldn't do to speculate on what may have been to blame for the driver's error.

The first 158 came into service in 1989. The Class 121 is Britain's longest serving DMU, operating in passenger service for 57 years until 2017.
