Shaldon bridge forms a very noticeable feature spanning the Teign Estuary carrying the A379/ It also provides a valuable platform for railway photographers surveying a long stretch of the main line. One has to be careful to mind the road traffic to get the shots.
In 1824 the Teignmouth and Shaldon bridge Company was established to raise money to build a toll bridge across the River Teign. The bridge, approximately 570 yards long, was designed by Roger Hopkins of Plymouth and was opened on the 8th June 1827
