As seems to have been the norm lately (6G09) 13.02 Goonbarrow – Fowey ran 30 minutes early, with 66199 still in full original EWS livery in charge, and the historical importance of this event – the end of 35½ years of CDA operation on this working – garnered much attention from photographers at Middleway Crossing. I thought it would be a nice touch to capture the very last loaded CDA wagon to cross St Andrews Road before hotfooting it through the park to Par Station! Here a stroke of luck saw ‘Castle’ HST 43027 + 43187 pull in on the (2P13) 11.50 Penzance – Plymouth presenting the opportunity to capture soon-to-vanish HST, CDAs and semaphore signalling all in one view – and even the livery on the locomotive is on borrowed time! Just minutes after the HST had departed at around 13.00 66199 was given the green light to follow it down the main line to Lostwithiel, still some way ahead of schedule according to which the train should have been just departing Goonbarrow!
Friday 11th August 2023 will mark the final loaded CDA run of all when the last serviceable rake departs Treviscoe for Fowey during the afternoon, unfortunately I don’t have the timings for this to hand - I will check during the morning but the question is, in common with so many freight workings, when will it ACTUALLY run?!
So from next Monday we must come to terms with a Cornish railway scene without CDAs and the dullness of just bogie JIAs on all clay workings? Not necessarily – there is a rumour that the JIAs themselves are to be replaced by another wagon type, examples of which are sitting spare up-country. Not sure if this would be just the Goonbarrow workings or all of them. Watch this space and perhaps don’t put the cameras away just yet……

I thought this was a fitting spot for a final photo as not only were the wagons refurbished in the former loading facility here, it’s also very near to the site of one of their most famous escapades, when in 2005 a few of them took a dive over the side of Prideaux viaduct, due to the rails going out of gauge.
Tomorrow sees a fowey - treviscoe, treviscoe - fowey and finally a fowey - st. blazey trip, all timings are on real time trains but beware, they usually run very early!!
I know they’re only wagons and it seems silly to get misty eyed over them, but their replacements, the bogied JIA’s, just aren’t quite as quaint as a long train of traditional 4 wheeled wagons!
All the best, Jon

Below are a few of my shots taken today of the final CDA working from Rocks, as well as a couple of others.
1. 66156 at Par after running around working an early 6C53 1147 Parkandillack to Exeter Riverside N.Y. which was waiting to go to St Blazey box to go into the yard.
2. 800316 arrives at Par working 2N84 0946 Newquay to Par.
3. 66199 at Middleway Crossing working 6G09 1302 Goonbarrow Junction Dbc to Fowey Dock Carne Point.
4. 43027 departs Par working 2P13 1150 Penzance to Plymouth. 66199 would follow it shortly afterwards.
5. 66199 along the causeway at Golant from the riverside in thick mist which had rolled in.
Thanks,
