Class 37425 In an earlier guise

Hi Roger and Keith, Although Regional Railways livery didn’t really ‘float my boat’ at the time (not much from Network South East onwards did, to be honest), I must admit 37425 ‘Sir Robert McAlpine/Concrete Bob’ does look very smart. It is a shame that impending RHTT duties may undo all that effort, but the RR livery will still be there under all the muck, so restoration should be possible with a bit of elbow grease – who knows, maybe it’ll work like T-Cut® car paintwork restorer and bring up a shine of unprecedented brilliance! Mention of its former identity as D6992 reminded me that this former Cardiff Canton Class 37, new to traffic in July 1965, was an early repaint into BR blue livery, in 1968 I think (possibly late 1967). As such it was one of the relatively few EE Type 3s to receive the BR double arrow logos on all four cabsides, and it was still in this condition when renumbered 37292 under TOPS in February 1974, one of only two like this (the other was 37245 on the Eastern Region). Photos of either in this condition are rare – mine shows it parked on Swindon Stabling Point on 13th June 1975 – it was overhauled and repainted into standard-pattern BR blue livery shortly afterwards, becoming 37425 at refurbishment and the fitting of Electric Train Heating equipment in April 1986. Best regards, Neil Phillips
Thanks Neil

Hi Keith,

Another visit to Cogload today to witness the passing of 37425 on its way from Plymouth to Norwich. Also passing at around that time was Castle set  43158/042 working 2c67, Cardiff to Penzance.

On the subject of  ‘Castle’ names, for the extra power cars in the fleet, perhaps those of
Dartmouth, Dorchester, Lydford or Tiverton could be considered worthy candidates.
Stay safe, Bill
.
