Coal Supply?
Phil Hawke
This is the latest delivery of coal to the Bodmin and Wenford from Ffos y fran in South Wales. Some of the biggest lumps seen for a long time but it looks as though this could be one of the last as the pit is being forced to close down. This was confirmed on the BBC news website today. Twenty-five tonnes at about £450 per tonne. Pre Mr Putin's dire actions it cost £200. Where future deliveries will come from , at what cost and of what quality remains to be seen.
The average consumption per day using 6412 is about three quarters of a tonne but this loco has to return to the South Devon Railway for repair. 5553, on hire from Peak Rail but owned by Pete Waterman, is taking over the services and will use a bit more. The railway's own prairie 5552 is due to return from a major overhaul by the end of the month. Of the rest of the fleet only Judy is in service with 6435, 4612 and 2766 awaiting overhaul. Even 08444 is out for heavy repairs . A far cry from the days when six steam locos were available!

With every best wish for a brighter future.
