Cornwall Railway Society Meeting report Last night meeting at the Memorial Hall it was a shame - we were treated to video colection by David Tozer of both steam and diesel. Unfortunately due to the rail strike David couldn't be present but Roger Wunnen provided an excellent commentary. Many thanks to David and Roger. Our President Peter Bragg provided the commentary to a collection of slides from our Millenium Collection. Peters stories and tales provided a most interesting accompaniement to the show. Many thanks to Peter for this. Don't forget - if you missed it yesterday now is your chance today to visit the Hayle Model Railway exhibition. Bugle box Roger Winnen Many thanks Roger.
Kingswear Castle at Dawlish Roger Salter The answer to Michaels quiz. Mystery location Michael Roach Are they right - the answer will be in Michaels next article - number 20. HST to the Severn Valley Sharpo I was on the footbridge to film it arriving and was talking to another person waiting to film it. He mentioned the Cornwall Railway Society & I noticed there was a photo of it with a link to the Society, don't know what his name was though. If anybody is interested I have uploaded my video of the HST at:- https://youtu.be/Ua8KiLa3L9w Having a chat with him helped pass the time, we were disappointed that it didn't run back to the SVR station at Kidderminster, instead it headed away towards Bewdley. Cheers, Sharpo. Many thanks 'Sharpo' - well worth watching - outside our reporting region really but I am sure that all will enjoy it. Cowley Bridge Jct Paul Barlow Another sad occasion - a last day. Two things to do this weekend On Saturday and Sunday And on Saturday Evening The CRS Meeting Why not fit them both in? Part 1 David Tozer DVD Trains around the South West Part 2 The CRS Millenium Project covering Branch Lines in Cornwall etc Peter Bragg NINETEEN SIXTY TWO – PART 19 Michael L. Roach Two from May '62 Plus a Mystery Photograph On 5 May 1962 I took a half-day trip from Plymouth to Newton Abbot and return for the princely sum of 6 shillings (30p – current price £8.50). The outward journey was on the 2.30pm which was The Royal Duchy, the 11.30am Penzance to Paddington; 7 coaches hauled by a D800 series Warship. The train was allowed nine minutes at Newton to attach a rake of coaches from Paignton. The object of the trip was to return on the 4.56pm off Newton a regular steam turn at the time. The train was the once-daily Liverpool to Plymouth which travelled via the Welsh Marches line, but the only stops on that route were Shrewsbury, Hereford and Pontypool Road Stations with the train avoiding Newport by means of the east curve at Maindee. Table 164 reveals that the train also had through coaches from Manchester to Kingswear. The two sections departed Liverpool (Lime Street) at 9.10am and Manchester (Picadilly) at 9.30am. The two sections joined at Crewe and left there at 10.20am. The train was allowed 64 minutes for the 32 miles from Newton to Plymouth with stops at Totnes and Brent. The loco had no difficulty keeping to time with on-time departure from Newton and on-time arrival at Plymouth. However that statement conceals a laboured climb from Totnes to Tigley when speed dropped to 14mph before Tigley Box recovering to 30mph at Rattery Box. The engine was single chimney Castle number 5055 Earl of Eldon of Newton Abbot Shed and the load was 7 coaches, which was well within the limit for a Castle-class engine over the South Devon Banks of 315 tons. The loco would be stored 4 months later but resurrected to work again from other sheds. MLR / 7 May 2023 Many thanks Michael - we look forward to part 20 and wonder what offers there may be to the mystery stations location. If you, our viewing public, have any answers or more pictures please send them in. Cross Country HST Jon Hird I took a trip to Respryn last night to capture the unexpected crosscountry HST which worked to Penzance. Then, later on, I headed to St. Austell station to see it on its return. I managed to get there in time to see 57603 on the sleepers, too. Many thanks Jon.

Phil Hawke Keith This is the latest delivery of coal to the Bodmin and Wenford from Ffos y fran in South Wales. Some of the biggest lumps seen for a long time but it looks as though this could be one of the last as the pit is being forced to close down. This was confirmed on the BBC news website today. Twenty-five tonnes at about £450 per tonne. Pre Mr Putin's dire actions it cost £200. Where future deliveries will come from , at what cost and of what quality remains to be seen. The average consumption per day using 6412 is about three quarters of a tonne but this loco has to return to the South Devon Railway for repair. 5553, on hire from Peak Rail but owned by Pete Waterman, is taking over the services and will use a bit more. The railway's own prairie 5552 is due to return from a major overhaul by the end of the month. Of the rest of the fleet only Judy is in service with 6435, 4612 and 2766 awaiting overhaul. Even 08444 is out for heavy repairs . A far cry from the days when six steam locos were available! Phil Hawke Thank you for this item Phil - things certainly look quite dire.
With every best wish for a brighter future. Plenty of action at Penzance this evening Roger Winnen Going Green at Westbury Driver Alan Peters Alan and the railways looking towards the future. Many thanks Alan.

Coronation Sunday at the Bodmin & Wenford Railway Roger Winnen A 60th birthday we just can't miss Western Courier Steve Widdowson Hi Keith. I know then SVR is off your patch, however D1062's 60th Birthday must be worth a mention, & then D821 came out ! Regards Steve Widdowson Many thanks Steve for your contribution and for pointing out that it is off our patch. However we all remember that both of these locos were on 'our patch' for several years and we all liked the hydraulics. Very nice pictures. HST Reprieve Railway Magazine May 2023 For those who mourne the passing of the HST's it brings joy to the hearts and minds of those who appreciate the comfort which these trains give versus their replacements that they have been given a further reprieve of around twelve months. Hooray, and so say all of us. Westerns in the far West Roger Winnen Treesmill Jon Hird Please find attached 2 photos of the new management train passing beneath Treesmill road bridge this afternoon (5th May 2023). In the portrait photo, you can see a bird of prey which is having some bother from a crow, their aerobatics were something to watch whilst waiting for the train. These photos were taken with the kind permission of the land owner. Kind regards, Jon Hird Many many thanks Jon, a lucky and most intersting shot.
