Hello Keith A fairly quiet period at the moment, and the weather rather grim anyway. Here is a shot from Par on 16th December 2013. The loco was 59005 and the train was not fully loaded today.
Best wishes Craig P.S. Could I send Festive best wishes to all the Cornwall Railway Society supporters, whether full members or web site viewers, and wish them a locomotive filled 2014! Many thanks Craig, I would also like to add my sincere thanks to you and all who have supported the web site with your super pictures and interesting reports. Keith Jenkin If you have any pictures taken on the walk across the Royal Albert Bridge on the 29th April 1984 and would be willing to share them please let us have them - full credit given. There are already some pictures of this tour in the railtours section.
In an earlier News Snip we showed Sid Sponheimer's picture of 'City of Truro' with the Westward Television Exhibition train at Plymouth. Sid couldn't put a date to it.
We have now been supplied with a list of dates. In those days there would of course have been spare sidings to stable the train. Truro Monday 13th February Falmouth Tuesday 14th February Camborne Wed & Thurs 15th & 16th February Penzance Fri & Sat 17th & 18th February St Ives Monday 20th February Newquay Tuesday 21st February Bodmin North Wednesday 22nd February St. Austell Thursday 23rd February Tavistock South Friday 24th February Launceston Saturday 25th February Bude Monday 27th February Tiverton Tuesday 28th February Taunton Wed & Thur 1st & 2nd March Bridgwater Fri 3rd March Weston S Mare Locking Road Sat & Mon 4th & 6th March Yeovil Town Tues & Wed 7th & 8th March Weymouth Thurs & Fri 9th & 10th March Exmouth Saturday 11th March Exeter Central Mon, Tues, & Wed 14th to 16th March Paignton Thursday 16th March Torre Friday 17th March Newton Abbot Saturday 18th March Plymouth (N RD) Mon to Sat 20th to 25th March Not sure whether you know this but the class57/6s sleeper locos are going back to RVEL at Derby for overhaul starting with 57603 Tintagel Castle according to this months Railways Illustrated.
There had been speculation that they were to have new engines to match the class 43’s but this is not to happen. They will have a G-exam and body & engine overhaul at Derby & 57603 should return to traffic mid-Jan. Thanks for that Roger and also to the 'Railways Illustrated' The Launceston Steam Railway will be running trains on Boxing Day, 27th, 30th and 31st December at hourly intervals.
Doomed. Now you see it, soon you won't. Located west of Newton Abbot this fine bridge is scheduled for demolition over Christmas, The bridge is no longer required for access and the widened road under the Kingskerswell by-pass scheme cuts across the southern end. The demolition will be a sad loss to railway enthusiasts who have long used it to gain those prizewinning pictures. Roger reports that there are ominous blue chalk marks on the structure. Access for the removal of the waste has been made down the side of the cutting. 11th December 2013 Copyright Roger Winnen
A couple of interesting pictures of the Westward TV exhibition train at Plymouth - can anyone date these please and perhaps give details of venues visited - it is believed Camborne was one. The last freight traffic to be deposited in the down sidings at Truro happened late on 7 April 1988 when 37673 dropped off two VGA wagons. The event was captured on video. The VGA wagons were collected about a fortnight later and to my knowledge no other rail traffic went in there again. The sidings were mothballed shortly after and severed although final recovery came when the Sidings property development happened. The illuminated diagram in Truro signal box was only updated to show the sidings removed when it was renewed as part of the Penryn loop work in 2009. Hope this helps.
