Hi Keith Here are a couple of pics I got yesteday (15th November 2015) on our ballast train on the barny branch heading for Portsmouth arms. 70805 & 70808 seen at Crediton with 6C28. Regards Paul Rundle Many thanks to you Paul Hi Keith, The scene at St Blazey just as the first glimmer of daylight skirts across the clouds above 66108 getting 6P07 ready for it's trip to Parkandillack via Lostwithiel on Mon 16th Nov 2015.
Quite an unusual look on this one. I like it but wish I'd had time to do some other exposures. If I tweak it too much I lose the wonderful cloud formations. Cheers Craig A super picture for which many thanks. Hi Keith, The section of line between Crediton and Barnstaple has been closed this weekend for relaying. So when a day day light opportunity arose to video/photograph a ballast train at Crediton it was not to be missed. I find it somewhat ironic that ballast has been brought this distance when not so long ago Meldon Quarry a few miles down the line to Okehampton, was producing what some former railwaymen call the finest ballast in the country. Dave With many thanks to our Exeter area reporter David Tozer. Michael Forward visits Exeter and South Devon photographing the Class 45 & 46s on 6th August, 198314/11/2015

Hi Keith I thought you may like to know about emergency exercise "Puffing Devil" that was held at Truro County hall on Fri 13th(!). Cornwall Council arranged and hosted a mock train crash at Paradise Crossing, Truro with a lorry carrying gas bottles. The scenario was set in July 2015, with 1C77 as the train involved. The lorry driver lost control and ploughed through the gates and was immediately hit by the Penzance bound HST, causing it to derail and catch fire. There were over 40 fatalities, and many others injured. The exercise was held in various rooms in County Hall, with over 90 delegates from the NHS, GWR, Network Rail, The Red Cross, all the emergency services, Council and many more. It was a hectic first few hours and the exercise lasted all day. Many lessons were learned by all concerned, and it was well organised, and the team work between all the individual players and their organisation was impressive. Let's hope & pray, we never need it for real. I've supplied some pictures from the main chamber, and operations room taken during the day. Best wishes, Craig. It is good to know that it was a successful exercise. We have every confidence in all concerned. The officers are all smartly dressed and generally look remarkably happy at having their pictures taken.
YEOVIL PEN MILL
THE TIMES – 12 NOVEMBER 2015 A Notice appeared in The Times under the heading Railways Act 2005 – Designation of Experimental Services:- that the Secretary of State was proposing to designate the passenger rail service proposed to be provided between Yeovil Junction and Yeovil Pen Mill stations that use the Pen Mill single line from Yeovil Junction station to Pen Mill Junction as experimental. This is to allow the service's long-term viability to be demonstrated before it becomes permanent. The designation is for a period of 5 years beginning on 13 December 2015. Yes there will be additional services details of which we are indebted to Martin Duff - many thanks The December 2015 timetable indeed provides an improved service for passengers at Yeovil Pen Mill. Here’s a quick summary of the Monday/Friday service: The 13.50 Waterloo/Gillingham is extended to Pen Mill, arriving 16.23, returning to Yeovil Junction at 16.30 which then forms a 16.48 service to Salisbury, which runs via Pen Mill (16.53/16.55) Castle Cary and Frome, reaching destination 18.17. Similarly, the 15.50 Waterloo/Gillingham is extended to Pen Mill, arriving 18.27, returning to Yeovil Junction at 18.33. The next two departures from Waterloo which currently terminate at Yeovil Junction are extended to Westbury and serve Frome in the process. Both presently run to Westbury empty via Pen Mill anyway, so this converting to passenger class is welcome. The 16.18 Gillingham/Waterloo is amended to start from Pen Mill at 15.42 using the inward unit off the 12.50 Waterloo (a Gillingham terminator presently). The 12.50 also serves Frome. The 18.50 Waterloo/Salisbury is extended to Pen Mill arrive 21.23, which then forms a 21.30 service round to Yeovil Junction, when runs empty to Salisbury. A couple of days ago Graham Mann sent us several pictures featuring the permanent way work at Portsmouth Arms on the Barnstaple branch. With reference to his picture 4 (see below), he asked what was the 'Cornish Connection'? The answer - These are re-cycled sleepers from the massive Hayle Viaduct refurbishment of a year ago. Note the additional clip positions for the guard rails.
Correct answers were given by Tony Hill and Roger Winnen. Congratulations to you both and thanks to Graham. Receiving information on Tuesday evening suggested that Penzance had seen the arrival of another Class 08. Visiting Long Rock this morning 08410 in its green livery was back once again, however it was bearing no GWR symbols as thought. However 57604 Pendennis Castle had backed with the Night Riviera to the depot and I was advised that this engine was due to depart on driver training to Par following the 10.00 to Paddington. Catching the bus from Long Rock gave me just enough time to photo this engine again running through St Erth Station. During my visit to St Erth it was revealed that major internal structures of the station building will be taking place, enlarging the booking hall, new toilet facilities and other necessary alterations, so this was the opportunity to photograph the scene at present. |
