During Saturday night/Sunday morning further upper sections were put in place in the building of the new footbridge at St Austell Station, with also the lift shafts being clad, very similar in appearance to Axminster Station. What was on the Cornish Mainline on Sunday Night 14th Sept. 2014 ? Hi Keith Nathan has come up trumps on Flicker! He referred me to a wonderful collection by a gentleman called Stephen (Steve) Burdett. He has many fabulous 70s Cornish images, including Westerns and some rare branches. His Holmans pictures are truly superb, and he has kindly agreed for us to show them on the CRS site! Here are three pictures taken in 1976, 2 days apart! 47209 appeared on 27/9/1976 and I had not seen a working there in 6 years of visiting my sister in Cornwall. Then 2 days later 1071 put in appearance. Definitely the icing on the cake!! Note from Craig: The 47209 shot has me confused as I understood that moves to / from Holmans were signalled in from the Ground Signal (number 16) on the crossover, there was no signalled route in from R4 at the station. Likewise, the short signal at the exit only read towards the Down Main, so I guess the loco heading Eastward from the point it is at would have been an "unsignalled" move towards Dolcoath crossing. The train is also beyond the treadles for Dolcoath crossing, so goodness how the crossing sequence was commenced, perhaps I'm asking some "awkward" operating questions.... Despite these teaser questions, they are a fantastic find, and Steve has offered us more pictures for the website. Kind regards Craig Many thanks to you Craig, to Nathan and especially to Stephen (Steve) Burdett. These will also go on the Roskear branch section. Evening Gentlemen,
A few shots from Rockstone Bridge, between Dawlish and Dawlish Warren. Regards Dave (This is work on the raised walkway on Dawlish seawall, earlier this week our attention was drawn to this by Martin Duff). Many thanks David Hi Keith Tuesday I guess you've been swamped with steam pictures from the ACE weekend, and Royal Duchy!! As the harvest sun continues to shine, here are some pictures from Up East, at St Germans taken yesterday. A word to the wise about grabbing every opportunity, I had spotted traditional hay bales in the fields here late last week, and headed up yesterday (9th Sept) to get the bales as a feature for the pictures. The busy farmer had removed them the day before, blast!! Many thanks Craig Martin Duff has kindly drawn our attention to the following news clip. Maurice Dart will be running another trip to visit china clay sidings in the Par -St Austell area in conjunction with the Branch Line Society on Friday 28th November, 2014 commencing at 09.00hrs. For further details please ring Maurice on 01726 65479 We have a stranger in our midst as 57310 Pride of Cumbria and 57604 Pendennis Castle hauled the Night Riviera into Penzance. It has been spoken that this engine is not allowed out on its own after failing on a couple of occasions rescuing the sleeper etc Trains in the Landscape by Craig Munday 140908 The top and Tailed Buffet in Plymouth Station hauled by 08645 Mike Baggott and tailed by another Laira 08. No doubt the carriage is on a running in trip or is it the management having "Meals on Wheels" Copyright David Potter. A correspondent suggest the buffet might be in the process of going to turn on the Laira Triangle as the First Class should be facing the other direction. 51 years ago today it was Saturday 7th September 1963, sad day which saw the last passengers on the 'Strawberry Line'. Fortunately for us Mike Roach was there with his trusty camera and captured various unrepeatable scenes such as the one below as two trains cross at Wells Tucker Street and 82037 takes water. 82037 was shedded at Bristol Barrow Road from October 1962 until condemned in August 1965. Was this the last day of work for the crew and of course the station staff who probably faced redundancy? Other than the Good Shed Wells Tucker Street no longer exists though a plaque has been placed at the location to remind those who never knew the location of its existence. To see more click here, we are hopeful of getting more pictures of the line - if you can help we'd be pleased to hear from you.
