More Scrap for Newport Simon Howard & Ken Mumford As Simon says - seems a shame - the stock looks in pristine condition. Many thanks to you Simon and Ken. Last days of Long Rock Coaling Stage Roger Winnen From Roger Winnens historical collection. Many thanks. Advance Warning CRS Photographic Competition Ian Mckey While you are all out and about enjoying the sun bear it in mind submitting your entries for next years photo competition - advance details below. These images can be copied and printed. ============================================================================================ Roaming Craig Munday A week back on day shifts and some super light on my travels. A call to the east of the patch to deliver some essential equipment for a signal repair allowed me a visit to the Ivybridge area. Only cut back a few years back, nature has gradually taken back the lineside and surrounds. The recent rain has given the foliage a real growth spurt too! The once delightful vista looking back to Blatchford viaduct is all but gobbled up with trees once again as the Midland Pullman HST makes its way back to Crewe following the Carlisle railtour the day before. On the 6th I was down west and caught Castle sets at sampson bridge near Angarrack, and checked in to see the new platform ends at Lelant, and the relocated footpath crossing, moved about 15 yards towards St Erth. One of the surviving blue liveried class 150, 150238 adding some colour variety in the midday sun. On the 7th, 66139 majestically sweeps across St Germans viaduct with the empty JIA's bound for St Blazey. The kaleidoscope effect causing the light levels to change before my eyes as the clouds ran across the sun. All the best, Craig. Many thanks Craig for an excellent weeks roaming - no wonder you enjoy your job !! EMU's Cardiff to Paddington Stratton Green, Swindon Ken Mumford On my way home this morning I saw another railway enthusiast with his camera standing on the east side of the Stratton Green road bridge. So, since curiosity killed the cat, I was keen to see what satisfaction it brought back! This enthusiast [whom I knew] was waiting for an EMU working from Cardiff to Paddington. Here are two of my photos - you MIGHT be interested. Kind regards, Ken Thanks Ken.
Teignmouth Clive Nye Many thanks Clive, a smashing evening shot. Swindon Traffic Ken Mumford Many thanks Ken. Gunislake area visit Stephen Widdowson Stephen spends the best part of a day on the Gunnslake branch. Pause for Refreshments at Bere Ferrers, a highly recommended spot. You had a good day Stephen - many thanks. Lostwithiel Footbridge Cornwall Live Work is set to commence on the construction of Lostwithiel's long-awaited bridge this autumn. It's after more than 1.8 million pounds was secured for the project to construct a footbridge over the Grenville Road level crossing, providing access to both sides of the train station. Passengers and local residents should benefit from quicker and easier access across the railway and to the station due to the addition, with the town having no footbridge currently. Construction is scheduled to start this autumn, and it is expected the bridge will be completed and open to the public next spring. Courtesy Cornwall Live.
Dashing through Dawlish Phil Smith Many thanks Phil, nicely caught long before 'the wall'. British Telecom Unit at Liskeard Michael Forward Thanks Michael Exhibition Way Exeter David Tozer A sunny evening at Exhibition Way overbridge, Exeter. A chance to compare the variations of the three car 158 fleet. A) 159010 and 159013 with the 1520 Waterloo to Exeter. These units were built as part of the Class 158 order and were modified for Network South East and became Class 159/0's B) 158798 with the 1832 5Z90 Axminster to Exeter. This is GWR's only true three car Class 158 having transferred from First Trans Pennine. Since the introduction of the 1631 Barnstaple to Axminster the unit usually works to Castle Cary and back and is used as a route refresher. For the second time since the introduction of the GWR service the unit has returned to Exeter in similar timings to what SWR did years ago. Dave Tozer Many thanks David for the pictures and the 'Gen'. Unusual visitors to Didcot Michael Forward Many Thanks Michael Creech St Michael Andrew Triggs Afternoon Keith/Roger, A visit to the classic location of Creech St Michael (east of Taunton) today, with great views either side of Dunnings Farm overbridge, a fair bit of variety to be seen, and the weather generally playing 'ball' for a change All the Best, Andrew. Many thanks Andrew. Holidays again! Marston Footbridge Ken avoids arrest ! Subject: Police, Trains and me. Regarding the police photo - Don't worry - i wasn't arrested - the two young policemen were concerned about seeing a person [ME!] being on a footbridge over a high speed electrified main line and wanted to make sure that I was OK - I very much appreciated their concern !. Kind regards, Ken Many thanks for your observations Ken - surprised you didn't make the National Newspapers!

South Devon visit Mark Lynam Good evening Keith/Roger, Yesterday (Saturday4th June) I went up to the South Devon Railway to photograph 33002 "Sea King" which was out for their Jubilee Rails and Ales event which saw steam and diesel services running. It was a wet start but dried up later on, although still overcast with thunder mixed in! But the only day I could attend due to working the other days. Thanks, Mark Lynam. A good day out Mark. many thanks.

WSR & Fairwater Yard Andrew Triggs Hi Keith/Roger, A few shots from today's ramble around Somerset for CRS, not the greatest day weather wise, but you can't have it all, hopefully things will improve for the WSR Diesels to the Sea Gala later next week All the Best, Andrew. Many thanks indeed Andrew - another good days catch. Looking back 45 years- a long time The Thames Tamar Express Clive Nye, Rogers Geach & Winnen Clive Nyes photographs from back to 1977 reminds us of one railtour which sparked a lot of interest in Cornwall. Then and now Polbrock Bridge Andrew and Diane Jones Dear Keith and Valerie, As I approach my 70’s, memories start to blur and scenes I once took for granted appear slightly muddled. The attached ‘then and now’ photographs illustrate the dilemma of ‘did I actually imagine this!’ Polbrock Bridge on the Wadebridge railway owes its existence solely to allow access to Pencarrow Estate land on the southern bank of the river Camel. Originally an unmade road, the lane crosses the railway and the river and was only tarmacked after the second world war. Anyone returning after 40 years would have difficulty recognising the view from the road bridge. Vegetation has taken over, with many small fields in the valley returning to nature. When visiting old railway locations this is often the case and can be disappointing even though in this case the Camel Trail now provides a direct route for many thousands of walkers and cyclists. The second photograph captures the sad demise of the railway, but in the ‘then and now’ illustration it is still possible to recognise the original route. Time travellers beware! Very best wishes Andrew and Diane Sad memories but thanks to you one can still travel the route by horse, bike or shanks pony. Many thanks for your contributions. Taunton 2010 Bill Elston Further to Guy Vincent’s piece on the ‘new’ 66734, attached is a photo of the original loco when numbered 66402 at Taunton on 25th june 2010. At that time, some Taunton – Cardiff stoppers were worked by top/tail Virgin class 57/3 thunderbird locos, but one had clearly failed and 66402 drafted in at short notice . It originally worked for DRS, but had then transfered to Freightliner, still blue but debranded. All the best, Bill Elston. Many thanks Bill Westbury Guy Vincent 66734 'Platinum Jubilee' departing Westbury for Cardiff Tidal this morning following an overnight layover in Westbury yard. I was making my way to the station for my next duty when the loco slowly crept 'up' the down reception line and set off towards Trowbridge. Researching the history of this loco has not been easy but I believe I am correct in saying it was built in 2001 and used abroad carrying the number PB04 & DE63 ( works number 20008254-6). Owned by Porterbrook Leasing of Derby a variety of liveries has been carried, most recently green. The loco arrived at Immingham Docks from Cuxhaven (Germany) on 10th December 2021 and was modified for UK use at Doncaster Roberts Road depot before moving south to Eastleigh for the 'Jubilee' paint job. It would be interesting to see this loco close by Freightliner's 66587 which is also finished in a pink / mauve livery (photo attached taken in 2019). This latter loco has recently been working off Taunton Fairwater with the 'HOBC' as noted this week by fellow contributor Bill Elston. Regards, Guy Vincent. Many thanks Guy
Norton Fitzwarren LSL HST Midland Pullman Andrew Triggs Hi Keith/Roger On vacation once more in Somerset, captured 43049/046 passing Norton Fitzwarren working 5Z69 08.12 Crewe H.S-Plymouth Friary S.S ECS for CRS All the Best Andrew Thanks Andrew Additional Stops advertised on IETs to and from Newquay Roger Winnen Travelling to Newquay yesterday the on train information system displayed on the IET displayed St Blazey Signal Box as the next stop out of Par, St Blazey Station closed in 1931 then Goonbarrow Juction both passing places on route to Newquay. Any information would be grateful. Surprise visit to Westbury Platinum Jubilee Guy Vincent A surprise evening arrival at Westbury almost straight out of the paint shop at Eastleigh works from where it emerged yesterday (Wed 1st). Newly painted in 'Platinum Jubilee' livery with temporary sticker-type nameplates (pending arrival of a pair of the traditonal cast variety) 66734 'Platinum Jubilee' stands in the down yard in failing light. Quite why it was sent here is currently unknown and no doubt the loco's movements over the next few days will be widely reported! Please note that this is the SECOND GB Railfreight loco to carry the number 66734. The first one, formerly 66402 prior to renumbering, was written off following a derailment in Scotland in June 2012 and has since been broken up. This one was imported last year and is GBRF's 100th class 66. Regards once again, Guy Vincent. This was the third much appreciated item of News for the day which came from Guy last evening. What more can I say but a very sincere thank you to you Guy from me and all our viewers. Your pictures together with masses of relevant information are a significant bonus to our website and to of those who study our News Column. HST Construction at Crewe Guy Vincent Not within our normal reporting region, however very relevant, these wonderful workhorses found employment far from their original allocations. Guy writes :- Hello again Keith, The attached photo was taken at Crewe Works during the open day that took place on Saturday 24th September 1977. It shows pre-formed class 43 power car cabs awaiting fitment to their respective frames inside one of the workshop areas. The cabs each had a number written on to the nose end and I think the one closest is for 43078 which became part of set 254012 along with 43079. Both these PCs finished their long careers with GWR and 43078 is currently at Laira for parts recovery pending final disposal. 43079 was disposed of at Newport Docks at the start of 2022. Regards, Guy Vincent. This was the second piece of information from Guy for the day - for which many thanks. Morbid interest. Caerwent & Newport K.J. At the present time we have featured quite heavily the progress of HST power cars from Laira to SIMS metals at Newport. Previous to this we have witnessed courtesy of Ken Mumford various classes on route for destruction passing through Swindon – virtually all the stock looked clean and in pretty good nick –it seemed sad to see them go. Caerwent - Many years ago I, KJ was at Swindon and witnessed the passage of an southern EMU being towed through - minus collector shoes. I guessed it was heading for the Ex. M.O.D. depot at Cearwent served by a short branch off the main line about a mile east of Caldicot Halt and virtually opposite the short branch to Sudbook pumping station. If you are interested you can go to Caewent on Google Earth and zoom in. Having got this far by turning back the clock at the top of the display and zooming in further one see the branch and the vehicles stored within the depot site. My sad thoughts on the EMU were renewed as we passed the unit sidelined at Wooten Bassett. Newport :- A well known colleague has directed us to a location on the world wide web where one can see three pictures of the SIMS processing plant – for reasons of safety it is obviously a place to stay well clear of. Do not go there. For anyone interested the photo dealing firm Alamy (alamy.com) have a number of photos online showing the rail vehicle processing area at Sims Metals in Newport Docks. There are two sets of photos. The first set was taken in January 2020 showing EMUs and Pacer DMUs in the scrap pile, the second batch, taken on a murky morning in January 2022, are generally of inferior quality due to the prevailing weather conditions at the time but show a number of vehicles either awaiting disposal or undergoing processing such as class 365 EMUs and the 3 HST power cars 43053 070 and 079. To find the location search for Alamy for 'Sims Metal Management' and you should find the photos. There is also a high quality aerial photo on Alamy showing the metal processing plant and yard. Hopefully of interest. On a serious but lighter note. Cremation Some years ago a member of our local group of the PRC, a former fireman who worked on the Plymouth - Penzance section of the main line told us many most interesting stories of what happened in the real world. A driver keen to see how fast he could go through Camborne on a down non stop train used to flog the steed from Redruth west. With the dieselisation and the consequent reduction in footplate staff this gentleman left the railway employ and took another job but again feeding the fires - this time at a local cematorium. Our good friend used to joke about the similarity of the two jobs but said he never wanted to be cremated. His dying wish was upheld and Roger and I attended his funeral many years ago after which he was interred in a local churchyard. As the coffin was lowered into the grave a traction engine nearby sounded his whistle in salute R.I.P. Dawlish Paul Barlow Many thanks Paul.
The Bodmin & Wenford Celebrates the Queens Platinum Jubilee 2022 Roger Winnen Royal train on the Falmouth branch Carnon Viaduct Emma Shard With Her Majesty The Queen celebrating her Platinum Jubilee this weekend, one remembers her visit to Falmouth for her Golden Jubilee on the 1st May 2002. This was the start of her Golden Jubilee tour, Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh travelled on the Royal Train to Falmouth where Her Majesty would open the National Maritime Museum and name the RNLI life boat 'Robert Cox Scott'. Many thanks Emma, a very appropriate picture. Carnon viaduct was one of the last 'Brunel' timber viaducts to be replaced - this taking place with effect from the 13th August 1933. 47441 at Newton Abbot Michael Adams Hello Roger, Interesting pictures on the site as always,Michael Adams was and is a great lover of The Westerns so we both enjoy your pictures of the class. Here is a photo. from his collection showing 47441 waiting to leave Newton Abbot on 8 August 1984 with the 1010 Paignton to Plymouth. All the best Copyright Michael Adams The 'Pink One' Norton Fitzwarren Bill Elston The spent ballast trip working from Fairwater yd to Bishops Lydeard and back was worked today by pink-liveried 66587, named AS ONE, WE CAN. Pink is the house colour of Ocean Network Express. Photos show its progress from Bishops Lydeard back to Fairwater. Hope these are of interest, Bill Many thanks Bill - most certainly of interest. A reminder of things past and things to come. South Devon Gala 2017 Paul Barlow Hello Keith Some shots from the 2017 South Devon railway Diesel Gala, featuring the Clayton class 17 which will be visiting the West Somerset railway next weekend. Kind regards, Paul. Many thanks Paul Don't forget the West Somerset Railway Class 17 visit this coming weekend. Stoke Canon Paul Barlow Hello again Keith. Just found this shot of 43197 which has just been sent for scrap in happier days in 2017 Kind regards, Paul Barlow. Knowing the speed at which SIMS work this power car which last passed this spot a few hours ago no longer exists. Many thanks Paul.
Funeral Procession The 31st May saw the collection of three HST power cars from Laira for their final journey for scrap at Sims at Newport. Here we follow the sad journey - the beginning of the end for the HST fleet. Today (31st May) saw three redundant HST power cars moved from Laira depot to Newport Docks (Sims Group) for scrap. The movement (5U56 1056 Laira-Newport Docks) was handled by GB Railfreight using one of their operational class 56 locos, 56081, and a barrier coach, 6393. Here the sad spectacle is captured at Bristol Temple Meads running around an hour early. 43069, 43193 and 43197 were once operated by Virgin Trains and later used on the Midland Main Line before joining the Great Western fleet in 2006. 43069 was originally delivered new to the Eastern Region in November 1977 as part of set 254007; I noted it under construction at the Crewe Works open day on 24th September that year. The other two were among the final batch to be delivered (to Laira) in time for the HST takeover of NE-SW services during the autumn of 1982. Regards, Guy Vincent. Many thanks to all our contributors. Drat, just missed it! Dennis Clarke I went to Exeter today (31st May 2022) to get some pictures of the scrap power car move from Laira to Newport. I think you have probably got enough pictures of that so I’ve sent you something different. After seeing the train pass Exeter, I followed it up towards Bristol and Newport hoping it would get looped somewhere but by the time my train got to Bristol, it had already gone and I arrived in Newport after it had gone through the station too ! Anyway, here is 66139 at Exeter working a late running 6V99 10:00 Exeter Riverside to St Blazey, 60055 at Newport with 6Z52 11:18 Oxford Banbury Road to Machen Quarry and 60039 at Newport with 6B41 12:15 Westerleigh to Robeston empty bogie tanks. All part of the day of chasing what was a very popular train as there seemed to be lots of people out everywhere for the power cars, Kind Regards, Dennis Many thanks for recording a rather frustrating day for you Dennis. Looking back The end of May Craig Munday I have been browsing the May 2022 folder, my goodness what a bumper month it's been weather and train wise. The Month included the double headed class 47s in two tone green and the GBRf weedsprayer of course. The threat of the reduction in the Castle sets on the long-distance services has seen the camera busy clicking the various duties they cover. Digital allows a "machine-gunning" of trains traditionally you wouldn't have wasted film on. Here are some late entries for the month, including an evening sojourn to Laira to see the now rather jaded looking blue power cars destined for scrap. 56081 made a trip down from Leicester to collect three such power cars bound for Newport. Quite poignant to remember the windowless Westerns and Hymeks here in the mid 1970s. Also included some pictures from Angarrack and St Erth following a shift there on Sunday. The lunchtime Tuesday working of the Exeter to St Blazey empty JIAs has brought another notable daytime freight to record. 66139 doing the honours today seen at Tywardreath. Best wishes, Craig Munday Many thanks Craig. Bolitho & Moorswater Chris Harvey HI Keith, Please find attached two shots from a spectacularly sunny Saturday 28th May. Lucky timing at Bolitho viaduct enabled me to capture old and new in the same photo - the HST heading west is the 0655 Exeter St Davids - Penzance, whilst the IET is the 0710 Penzance - Paddington. A walk to the footbridge at Moorswater then allowed me to photograph the 1218 Penzance - Paddington under a gorgeous blue sky, lead by 802 019. Best Regards, Chris Harvey. Keep up the exercise Chris - many thanks.
