David Tozer has kindly forwarded the following link concerning the development of a new station at Cranbrook - on the Exeter to Honiton line. It makes interesting reading. Many thanks David.
Derek kindly gave us the above picture saying that he had come across the crossing when on a walk with friends in the Stalbridge area. However it wasn't at Stalbridge itself as the station there had double level crossing gates. Further detective work using 'Google Earth Street View' resulted in Common Lane Crossing, this is north of Stalbridge station site, about a mile south of Templecombe being a likely location. However, the house currently at Common Lane does not match with the property above - it is much bigger. A letter to the Gartell Light Railway brought a quick reply from John Penny which makes very interesting reading and is reproduced below. Dear Keith, Your letter was passed onto me and I can definitely confirm that it is COMMON LANE CROSSING, the first crossing south of Templecombe. It is taken looking south , the house unfortunately did not survive as during rebuilding the walls became unstable due to there being no foundations!!! However a replica house was constructed, but double the size with two gables and a replica porch in the same location as the old. The GLR now crosses the road at the old location on our new northern extension , I attach a photo of the same location today. The other location you were thinking of PARK LANE CROSSING on our southern route still has the gate posts, one kissing gate but unfortunately the house is long gone. Also in the picture above is the sleeper built PW hut, it was only two years ago when we installed a new gate that we finally removed the last of the sleepers that formed the rear wall of the hut. Regards C.J.Penny GLR Many thanks to John for this information and for both of the photographs below. Another visit by the Cornwall Railway Society to the Gartell Light Railway is already in our provisional programme for 2016.
It happened to be Flora Day in Helston when the Crockle Grid railtour visited Cornwall on the 8th May 1995. Having brought the railtour from Bristol 56064 has been relieved of its charge at Plymouth and proceeds Light Engine to Penzance. The railtour, which had already proceeded visited Carne Point and St Ives. Copyright Steve Widdowson
After the St Ives run, the 37's were cast aside and 56064 took over the returning railtour under an unusual sky seen here passing the familiar sight of Hallenbeagle Engine house. In the distance lie Scorrier woods and on the horizon, to the left, is Carn Marth. 8th May 1995 Copyright Steve Widdowson.
Hi Keith, The forecast was wall to wall sunshine, but the cloud maker was certainly in action today. I opted for the Parkandillack branch as 66171 is due to be swapped out with 66090 tomorrow.
The train normally runs in two portions back from Treviscoe / Parkandillack, but you never know when! The Little Treviscoe crossing shot could have done with more sun to highlight the white tip in the background. The High Street distant shot has the famous "sugar-loaf" in shadow unfortunately, but displays well the varying light we have in our beautiful County. Cheers Craig Many thanks to you Craig Reference the current exchanges about this, the accident report is here: http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/documents/MoT_Torquay1962.pdf
The allegation about a female on the hotel fire escape is not confirmed – the investigation says it was a man! Cheers, Paul This makes extremely interesting reading - very many thanks to Paul for drawing our attention to this. Keith, This is quite a well-known accident, although the precise details escape me now.
In essence, the Hall had passed the signal seen behind it at danger and entered the block section ahead illegally, where it collided with the train already in the section. IIRC it was claimed that the driver’s view of the signal was obscured by a person on the fire-escape on the side of the building (hotel?) in the bend of the line, tho’ I believe there was a spurious allegation that the fact of it being a young, attractive female played a part! This was not in fact the case. a mischievous allegation! Chris Many thanks for your interesting words Chris. However, further to this please go to the link kindly sent in by Paul Burkhalter details above. Keith, Hope you are keeping well here is a picture of mine taken inside Barnstaple Signal Box on 18/07/1987 it might be worth inclusion in the Devon Galleries Section Exeter to Crediton Barnstaple Ilfracombe section. Kind Regards Graham Many thanks Graham
Many thanks to Craig and Roger. In April we hope to bring you a collection of pictures taken at various points on the Somerset and Dorset Railway between Evercreech and Bournemouth. Although Poole wasn't part of the S & D its trains from Bath passed through Poole on route to the terminus at Bournemouth West. Here we see a most interesting view captured by Sid Sponheimer of the busy level crossing at High Street Poole. Note of course 76012 coming from the Bournemouth direction but also note the crowds held up by the gates - the Bedford lorry, the cyclists, no helmets, though one is wearing a trilby, on the other side somebody has spotted Sid with his camera on the footbridge. Note also the crossing keepers cabin. The date is the mid 1960's Copyright Sid Sponheimer Hi Keith, I have attached a pic from the late Dave Pagett, a Signalman from Worcestershire who passed on a couple of years ago. He left has photo collection to me.
The attached picture from his collection seems to show a bit of a mishap, it is marked up as 4932 at Torquay August 25th 1962. Any ideas ? Steve Widdowson Has anybody else any knowledge of this incident? |
