Cornwall Fire Service said a small fire in the engine compartment was extinguished. Passenger Andy Smith, from Plymouth, said: "I could smell an electrical burning smell. Then a couple of passengers came from further up the train and smoke was following them. "I spoke to a couple of the First Great Western employees, and they waited about 30 minutes and we got taxis on from there." From a BBC report.
A Plymouth to Truro train was evacuated after smoke was reported. Passengers had to be evacuated from a train after some saw smoke "billowing through the carriages". Passengers travelling from Plymouth to Truro complained of a "burning smell" on the train, which was forced to stop in Liskeard at 10:15 GMT on Monday 10th February 2014. The evacuated passengers were then made to wait on the station's platform before taxis were laid on for them.

Both pictures taken in 1962, one wonders if scenes like those below will ever be repeated if the Exeter - Okehampton - Tavistock - Plymouth option for the Dawlish avoiding line is taken up. Whilst nobody would wish to lose those magic views along the sea wall at Dawlish the chance of a ride on this line skirting rugged Dartmoor and including a crossing of this famous viaduct would be a dream come true. As 34023 Blackmore Vale still exists it is just possible that the first of the views could be taken sometime in the future.
Today Sunday 9th February, 2014 the 09.30 Voyager 221 went through to Newton Abbot, possibly the first since the Dawlish Sea Wall incident. However the Essential tunnel works between Taunton and Exeter are due for completion today providing that its running to time, and tomorrow we may see again a differant timetable. At present tomorrows timetable is not available. One thing for certain, we are now marooned! with a landslide near Crewkerne cutting the west only link which is estimated to take several days to clear the debris. Many thanks Roger. It is good to report this morning that the Crewkerne line is now open and that Whiteball tunnel has re-opened on time - congratulations to Nework Rail and their hard pressed staff. Hi Keith,
I wonder what Monday will bring? Freightliner has run a Class 66 light engine both ways between Taunton and Exeter. A lot of gossip on websites as to the future of the line to Plymouth via Dawlish. David Lets hope Monday brings some more good news. Please sign this petition (600 so far in a couple of days!) calling on Govt. for re-instatement of the Exe/Oke/Tav/Ply line as an alternative/diversionary route for Plymouth & Cornwall Rail traffic to the closure prone Dawlish Coastal route.
Please also forward this to your contacts etc. Click on the link below. http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/60302 It would appear that the problem caused by a Landslip near Crediton has been overcome and trains are running once more.
Keith, Sunday 9th February 2014
With the line now severed at Crewkerne FGW provided the rare sight of 150248 working the 2Z10 Exeter(St David’s) – Axminster. The first of several shuttles to be worked by their staff. At last some common sense in the operation of our railways in this privatised world. Dave While this afternoon 8th February 2014 we hear that the Southern Route is now blocked due to a landslip at Crewkerne and with Whiteball tunnel not opening until Monday it looks as if for a few hours we're completely cut off again. The Taunton to Bristol route is also closed by flooding.
As they say 'It never rains but it pours', truer words never spoken in jest! However Roger Winnen has been out with his camera and to prove it three pictures. Many thanks to Nathan Stockman for recommending this astonishing footage of an HST midst the floods of Somerset. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-26084245 DON'T MISS THIS
A list of stock west of Dawlish provided by Nathan Stockman
The list of what is trapped west of Dawlish isn't quite correct. 150122 is on the English side, and there are a couple extra 153s here, actual unit list reads: 150125, 150129, 150130, 150131, 150202, 150219. 153305, 153329, 153361, 153369, 153370, 153372, 153377. 150130 is in need of repair at Laira after collision with a tree. Then theres 57602 at Long Rock with a Sleeper set (PZ88). HST wise, there are 4 full coaching stock sets, number of power cars is unclear, but definitely on the Kernow side are: 43005, 43018, 43042, 43093, 43094, 43127, 43146, 43177, 43183. Formed up today as: 43177 + OC47 + 43183 43094 + OC54 + 43018 43093 + LA73 + 43005 43146 + OC30 + 43127 Cross Country have: 220013, 220014, 221127, 221134. Freight wise 66006 is at St.Blazey, doesn't appear to be any movement today, was two trips Goonbarrow to Fowey yesterday. Only other mainline engine is 60096 stored at BZ. Hope this helps. Nathan Stockman Many thanks for the list we know that FGW are doing their very best under difficult circumstances. |
