Morning Keith, Just back from Plymouth and reading about the sea weed traffic that ran for a short time from Truro on your web page..
Not the West Country but here is 31439 on that traffic heading for Selby at South Millford (nr Selby ) 29 3 96 with that traffic from Truro.. The empties went back later that day to Bescot then no doubt back on the Cliffe Vale to St Blazey. Cheers Roger Geach Many thanks Roger This is in response to Steve Widdowson's picture and query on the News Page a short while ago. Many thanks Roger Hi Keith, Yes, I was on holiday at St Austell in 1962. Home then was Weston super Mare but I have lived in Cardiff for the past 40 years. I saw that you are featuring the Portishead branch this month and so attach the following. These were all taken in the summer of 1960 when my father was in Ham Green Hospital. 82032 was on Pill ("Pill, Pill I love thee still" if you remember Adge Cutler's song!) viaduct. I came across your site as I have been trying to confirm my memory of an abandoned station at Uphill. The story is that the landowner insisted on a station but never stipulated that trains should stop! I think I remember grassy mounds that could have been platforms but can find no real photographic evidence. From recent pictures there is now no trace. I will send more pictures from time to time....John Thorn Many thanks John - these will be added to the Portishead collection. Roger Aston was up and about early this morning to see, from an unusual angle, the down sleeper crossing Blackwater viaduct. Thank Roger.
A couple of days ago John Thorn wrote in and asked if we'd like any of his 1962 shots - without a doubt, the reply was "Yes please", and here they are. Scenes long forgotten but saved for us all. Many thanks John. September 1962 and here we see the up platform and signalbox taken from a down train Helston bound. The line only had a few more weeks left of passenger service as it closed on the 5th November 1962. Maybe trains will visit Nancegollan again care of the Helston Railway Preservation Society - lets hope so. Copyright John Thorn Hello Keith, Not a good morning for passengers in west and mid Cornwall today. 1A76, the Up Golden Hind failed near Probus and the only loco available to assist it was DRS 57303 heading west on the down sleepers. 1C99 was caped at Par, the 57 ripped and sent light to Truro where it crossed over to the up and ran to the rear of the HST. Bristol green 43126 (reported about earlier in the week) was behind the 57 as it arrived back at Truro shortly before 09.00. Once cleared, the 06.18 HST to London departed, almost three hours late. Regards, Martin Many thanks Martin Hi Keith, I expect you've had lots of images from our corespondents regarding the failure of 1A76 this morning near Buckshead Tunnel, and subsequent drag back to Long Rock. I missed most of the action, but saw 57303 arrive back at Par to attach to the marooned down sleeper stock in the down platform. I grabbed a quick one of the empty stock heading west near St Austell station, and then was at Long Rock in the afternoon with work to see resplendent 08641 in the sunshine. The errant 1A76 set and 57303 were side by side elsewhere in the depot. Cheers Craig Greatly indebted to you Craig. |
