Plymouth to Okehampton - the Southern Route
The majority of the pictures which form the basis of this collection of pictures were from the camera of Roger Winnen. These were taken sometime after the closure of the route, demolition had taken place and vegetation had taken over. However, if anybody has pictures to compliment this collection, they would be very much appreciated. Pictures will be duly credited.

Opened in 1879 as a standard gauge railway from Bridestowe down line siding (on the right in the view below) it was constructed to the peat works at Rattlebrook on Dartmoor is one of the moors lesser known railways.
The line constructed in 1879 for the Duchy of Cornwall was seven miles long. It was operated for almost all of its life by horse and had only one passing place, just over half way along the line from Bridestowe where the line reversed direction.
At the top some 100 ft above the station there was an assortment of building and kilns for drying the peat which was brought from the cuttings by trucks run on a network of narrow gauge lines. At one time the operation employed around 100 men.
