January to June 2015
This is an experimental page designed to take long reports of three pictures or more away from the 'HEADLINE NEWS' section where long reports tend to 'swamp' any short, but otherwise interesting items.
In line with what seems to be popular opinion the order of items appearing on this page has been changed such that, just as with the Latest News, the most recent 'Features' appear at the top of this page.

Snow scenes on the Somerset and Dorset
Although we are into spring and nearing summer there are warnings of snow in Scotland today (26th April 2015) so we have an excuse to look back 52 years with some snow scenes taken by the late John Stamp. From the Ian Bunnett Collection.

A taste of what was about to come . Chris Osment says ; " My ‘local expert’ reckons that it was taken at the southern end of Lyncombe Vale, looking back towards Bath Junction with Mogers Bridge (No. 13) in the background visible, so it was actually between Bath Jcn and Combe Down tunnel.
Copyright the late John Stamp from the Ian Burnett Collection
Must apologise that through the passage of time we don't know exactly where all these pictures were taken, but thank heavens Driver Stamp had the forethought to have taken them - he must have had to warm his hands in the firebox before he could operate the shutter. Many modern digital cameras would refuse to work in such harsh conditions.
Here is Fireman Ian Bunnett having escaped from the heat of the cab to stand on the tank while it was filled. It was fortunate that the tank wasn't frozen, Ian used an expletive to describe the conditions - it was B... cold!! note the snow plough attached to the front of Jinty 47276. This scene at Shepton Mallet. Copyright the late John Stamp, from the Ian Bunnett collection
Taking a wider view at Shepton Mallett, we see the water column is protected by a fire devil which presumably is lit - there is a small pile of ashes under it. The signalman (Bobby) surveys the scene from the warmth of his cabin, he has made it into work somehow! Perhaps it is his duty to stoke up the fire devil from time to time. 6th February 1963 Copyright the late John Stamp. From the Ian Bunnett collection.

Note. Getting permission to walk on the tracks was easier back in 1974 - just a case of asking the foreman.
The fascinating pictures which follow were undated, so pending any further information the following has come from Roger Geach - an expert. I guess its 1984 .Headcodes on the front were done away with in 1976 but we did not get headlights until later. Also 47565 was not in existence until November 1980 prior to that it was 47039. Many thanks Roger.

Laira Bridge Refurbishment
Today, 9th February 2015 it was announced that the half way stage in the refurbishment of this former rail bridge had been reached. From the photographs supplied by Trevor Tremethick, for which many thanks, it can be seen that the sturdy bridge which once carried trains for Turnchapel and Yealmpton and also cement traffic from Plymstock Cement Works is being refurbished to carry bicycles and pedestrian traffic.

FALMOUTH
Latest pictures of the re-laying operation at Falmouth station and threshold. Many thanks to Graham Mann Network Rail Programme Manager.
A question was raised as to why timber sleepers were used at all in connection with the new steel sleepered track which has been installed at Falmouth. See pictures 068 & 070. Here is Grahams answer :-
When relaying steel sleepers, if the extent of the renewal abuts to concrete the standard stipulates there has to be a transition of hardwood sleepers usually about 4. At the Docks end the track renewal abutted the stop blocks, the stop block sleepers are wood BH and the adjustment switch was laid on FB hardwood which was joined to the BH track with a FB to BH transition rail. Basically you can join steel sleepers directly to wood but not to concrete. Regards Graham. Many thanks for the info Graham.

Note in picture 068 above that in the transition from the -'original' Falmouth branch track to the new track laid on steel sleepers there are four wooden sleepers.
Again timber sleepers appear just before the end of the line.

Hi Keith
A brief & welcome spell of sun brought respite from the gloom of one of the darkest months.
Sun 18th: Some Liskeard photos including:-
43145 arriving on the Up in fine sunshine. 43145 is the front power car.
150244 brings up the rear of a 5 pack, 150 / 153 / 150 lash-up bound for Exeter St Davids. Sundays often throw such multi workings.
43163 sits in the platform still looking very smart with the Visit Plymouth vinyls attached. All enhanced with some welcome sunshine.
Mon 19th: I have long neglected the scenery on the Falmouth branch, and enjoyed the view of trains passing the magnificent Carnon viaduct standing proud across the valley.
Almost unique in that the southern facade is uncluttered by foliage. 150122 is the unit atop the viaduct
The S bend is very prominent in the line heading off towards Penwithers Jn in the second view of the 2 class 153s numbers 153318 / 329 Truro bound.
Kind regards Craig Many thanks Craig

An update on Hayle Viaduct Refurbishment
by Mick House
Through a series of five pictures taken on Friday 16th January 2015 Mick shows us the great strides which have been made in the refurbishment of Hayle Viaduct. Many thanks to Mick and to Scott Pillinger of Network Rail for granting permission to view and take photographs.
Walkham Viaduct - demolition Mike Roach
Mikes notes :- Came across these pics of Walkham Viaduct while looking through my records. They show the details of the riveted construction and the concrete slab above the battle-deck steel flooring which can still be seen underneath some bridges to this day e.g. by Redruth Station and by Hayle Station. For more pictures of this route see our 'Devon Galleries' - Marsh Mills, Tavistock and Launceston Section
Walkham Viaduct during demolition in January 1965. An interesting view taken right 'at the brink' shows detail of the decking. At 367 yards Walkham Viaduct was one of the longest bridges or viaducts in Devon and Cornwall. It originally had 17 spans but was rebuilt with 15 spans. Copyright Mike Roach

Peek Hill Bridge
From Trevor Tremethick
From Trevor Tremethick
This first item is of the site of Peek Hill bridge. The former rather low bridge was a location used by Princetown Prison Wardens looking for escaped prisoners!! Trevor Tremethick writes - - Hi Keith, Sorry to be so long getting back to you. I haven't been able to find out much more about the bridge reinstatement (if that is what it is) but have found reference to it on the internet in 'Railway Ramblers News'. It was always quite a difficult and potentially dangerous road crossing for walkers and cyclists. I managed to get there in better weather over Christmas with no work taking place and took these closer views. You can better see here the quite substantial abutments (can't just be for cables surely!) which look to be a bit higher than the original so perhaps the tour buses will be able to pass underneath. The first four photos are looking from the Dousland direction so Lowery Crossing and Burrator are off to the right. The fifth shot looking towards Dousland shows the embankment as the line headed off towards Ingra Tor and Princetown.
