Slough to Par
A compilation prepared by
Roger Winnen.
I seem to have been the only one on the Laira Flyover for this. We were supposed to drive to Ivybridge, but Barbara’s summer cold had put her out of action, so Laira it was.

A bit odd – the engine is Galatea, nameplates Sierra Leone which match the front number 45627 but the cabside says 45562 (Alberta). Go figure, as the Yanks would say.

A grisly day, the tide out in ‘The Laira’ and the Hitachi lurking in the background adds nothing. Not much clag either. Apart from that, everything was fine. And two minutes early!

Kind regards to all,  Trevor Tremethick

One thing I did find interesting was that the coal lorry had come down especially from Coventry! Next week they are going to Edinburgh to refuel another railtour. I know coal is a bit of a commodity in 2023 but I never for a second expected it to be that hard to come by! Copyright Jon Hird

Burton on Trent to Weymouth -Pathfinders 50th Anniversary Railtour
Preserved class 40 D345 / 40145 on the 0701 1Z40 from Burton on Trent to Weymouth, seen racing through Swaythling station. I believe Class 40s were as rare in the Southampton as they were in Cornwall back in the last century. I recall the thrill of seeing one whistling into Bristol Temple Meads on a parcels train from the north in the mid 80s.
This special raised a similar level of excitement and i was surprised to see 7 teenage rail fans on the station, which isn't an obvious photographic haunt. I managed to get my bike info the left hand side of the shot. I think one of the regular contributors also does this.

Last Saturday (10th June) Pathfinder Railtours ran their 50th anniversary tour from Burton on Trent to Weymouth.  The outward trip from Cheltenham was via Kemble, Swindon, Reading West, Basingstoke, Southampton and Poole with the return leg made via the former GWR route through Yeovil, Westbury and Bath.    Charlotte caught the train passing Berkley Marsh north of Frome with an immaculate D345 (40145) leading and two-tone green class 47 47815 'Great Western' at the rear while I went to Bradford on Avon where a short pathing stop was made.  Nice to see the original F&W Railtours 'Vulture' headboard on the front of the loco.

Just got back from Teignmouth; Bahamas was 16 minutes early (Realtime Trains) and caught us all out. Coming on very fast and a tad of movement on the smokebox I fear. A lovely day, lots of people out and I can even forgive this family for turning up at the last minute and getting in my shot (doesn’t everybody). The sausage bap at the café was pretty good as well.
Got a friendly (I hope) couple of toots from the driver of 43285 on 1V46 0613 Leeds – Plymouth XC. 43357 was bringing up the rear.
 Kind regards, Trevor Tremethick
P.S.  I rather like the inclusion of the family in this picture - it really gives it scale. I would say excellent composition.

Here is today’s train, the 1Z10  07.11 Paddington to Plymouth, passing Brent about 5 minutes early. The Great Britain XV sounds more like a rugby team. The Class 5 was making quite a racket and doing, I should think, about 60-70 mph. The lineside foliage is growing unchecked and will eventually make this location difficult if something is not done.

Unfortunately, after the train had passed, my friend and I were accosted by a middle-aged woman who berated us for enjoying something that was (in her words) “burning coal”. We did not rise to the bait (although we could have suggested that she go and protest in China where they are still building coal fired plants like there is no tomorrow). We just smiled and said we will enjoy it whilst it lasts. She went off still muttering about “burning coal”. Perhaps she was going to glue herself to the A38. I would have provided the Evo-stick.

Kind regards to all. Trevor Tremethick.

I hope you can make use of some of the shots.

Picture
70000 Britannia emerges from Parson's Tunnel with the 1Z60 06.18 Dorridge - Kingswear run by Saphos Trains. The train was about ten minutes late and annoyingly a bank of cloud had blocked out the sun on this stretch of the coast which just twenty minutes earlier was bathed in glorious sun. BR two-tone green liveried D1924 (47810) brings up the rear of the 1Z60 . The train had worked top and tail from Dorridge with 47805 on the front so it would appear that this is set now for the summer as insurance provision unlike the recent 6233 Duchess Of Hamilton tours which were solo operated. The good news is that this is the first of nine Saphos' Saturday tours from various locations to Kingswear throughout the summer and with 70000 outbased at Bishop's Lydeard on the West Somerset Railway in order to work these trains I hope to have a few successful stabs at this shot here in somewhat brighter conditions. Whether the Brit will provide some smoke over the coming weeks remains to be seen. The 7F Britannia class is my favourite class of steam loco ever since I was captivated by them when I first started trainspotting age six in 1966 at Kearsley on the Manchester - Bolton line. I was very fortunate to live in the North West then the last bastion of steam in the country. It was their size and power but also their names that laid out next to their numbers in the Ian Allan spotting books (bar 70047). Many of the class were still going strong in 1966 with only a handful of withdrawals before that year including 70000 Britannia which I never saw until a tour about a decade ago. My notebooks from that era disappeared fifty odd years ago but my memory recalls me spotting about forty of the fifty five of which nearly all were filthy and grimy and smoking a lot more than 70000 today.
