Bank Holiday Monday at Calstock

Diane and I spent this bank holiday afternoon in Calstock.
We were greeted by a group of swans and cygnets which form an excellent foreground to record the 13.32 service to Plymouth using set 150221. Holding an ice cream at the time didn't help the photograph but I have sent it in anyway!
We pondered the route to Callington and realised just how much has been lost since closure.
The viaduct saved the line to Gunnislake and always sits as a testament to Edwardian engineering, being the largest concrete block viaduct in Britain. Construction was completed in 1907 using 11,148 unreinforced blocks, long may it continue.

Following yesterdays photos of 47237 in Cornwall, here's a picture of it on the Pengam to Stratford freightliner near Marshfield on 15.05.1989. It was a Cardiff Canton engine for many a year until a move to Tinsley in July 1987. Copyright Roger Geach.

Staverton Rails & Ales

The South Devon Railway and Devon Diesel Society held their semi annual Rails & Ales over four days of this bank holiday weekend at Staverton. The weather forecast could be best described as changeable but the rain held off on the Friday with the sun shining most of the afternoon for my visit. 33002 and GWR 0-6-0 pannier tank 1369 were the locos operating the trains and there was even a class 25 themed beer. Sadly some midday trains were cancelled on the Saturday when 33002 failed, but the bubblecar 55000 stepped in to cover one round trip before 5526 took over for the rest of event's diesel diagrams.
