Hot off the press!
The first views off the new Lostwithiel Footbridge
Roger Winnen

Our intrepid roving reporter Roger was on-scene at Lostwithiel yesterday, 18.09.2024, to be amongst the first customers to cross the line via the new (temporary) footbridge. Roger captured some photographs from the new vantage point which are below - a full set of photos will follow soon.

Sunshine at Goonbarrow
Craig Munday

A visit to Goonbarrow yesterday on duty to see 08752 and 66152 in the fine light and sunshine. If it's fair weather up there, it really IS a nice day!

The advent of the 16 wagons on the Carne Point circuit has seen shunting simplified since the CDA days. The loco is attached to eight loaded JIAs which it simply pushes back and attaches to the other eight ready for departure. This places the loco beyond the complex points which allows a nice picture alongside the "lawn" which has been cut back in recent months.

The blue sky, red loco and semaphores was a delight to see.

Many thanks Craig, wonderful scenes - long may they continue.

Golant
Jon Hird

Picture
In some unseasonably warm weather, 66152 crosses the causeway at Golant with 6G09 from Goonbarrow on 18.09.2024. The train is shorter than usual, 11 JIA's rather than 16, because on a Wednesday some of the wagons are used to form a portion of the train which takes clay to the midlands. Copyright Jon Hird.

A sunny day at Carbis

A super photo - many thanks Dennis, what a wonderful part of the world.

NINETEEN SIXTY FOUR – PART 6A
Update to Part 6
Michael L. Roach

In Part 6 (click here) I recorded the number of cargo ships arriving at Fowey in July and August 2024 to collect china clay for export, some of which had arrived at Carne Point by rail. The numbers were not good. As Part 6 was being published things took an unexpected and welcome turn for the better with three ship arriving at the port in just 24
hours. They were the following:

  • Eems Rover from Ringaskiddy in Ireland near Cork
  • Runner from Poole
  • Trio Firat from Plymouth

The destination of the clay was Antwerp in the case of Runner; Abu Qir, Egypt for Trio Firat; and Izmir, Turkey for Eems Rover. It was great to see Eems Rover at the quayside in Jon Hird's drone shot posted on 18.09.2024 The hatches are closed, the loading gantry is raised out of the way, and the ship is about to cast off. The official recorded time for leaving Fowey was 19.02 hours but it is believed that that is when the Fowey pilot leaves the vessel at the mouth of the river with the open sea ahead.

Whereas most of the ships arriving at Fowey are general cargo ships, one of the three (Runner) is also capable of carrying containers and is now on its way to Hamburg where it is due to arrive on 19 September 2024.

Watching Michael Portillo travel through Cornwall recently (but recorded many years ago) he met the late Ivor Bowditch of Imerys in a claypit. Ivor quoted the following figures as the end uses of the clay produced: coating paper 50%; ceramics 30%; the rest 20%; and that 85% of the clay produced in Cornwall was then exported.

Many thanks as always, Michael.
