The Northern Belle
'Cornish lunch via Dawlish'

Clive Smith, Mark Lynam & Jon Hird

57601 and 57313 top and tailed the luxury Northern Belle dining set into Cornwall on Thursday 17th. Working from Cardiff - Par and back, the charter was named 'Cornish Lunch Via Dawlish'. This service has been a regular fixture on the Northern Belle calendar in recent years.
Picture
Clearly the attraction of the train was the food and not the motive power or the seven minutes in Par. Some might say that is too long. I always thought a Cornish Lunch was a pasty and a cream tea with.. er.. jam first , but apparently it's Royal Siberian caviar , hand poured champagne (is there any other way ?), compressed watermelon (?), seared Scottish halibut with nettle purée. The outward journey was 1Z27 10.35 Cardiff Central - Par and the return 1Z28 15.40 Par - Cardiff Central. The average price for these journeys is around £500 - 550. 57313 leads the outward leg towards Laira. 17.09.2026, copyright Clive Smith.

'Slim Jim' in Plymouth
Roger Geach

Below is a picture of 33202 and 33024 at Plymouth on Saturday, 8 February 1975. They had arrived on the 07:02 Wimbledon to Plymouth day excursion.

The “Slim Jim” 33/2s were rare visitors to Exeter in the early 1970s, let alone Plymouth, so this was quite a sight.

Did anyone else see this excursion that day?

Picture from the late Tony Gale.

Sadly, there is some damage to the slide, so it’s not in perfect condition.

Many thanks Roger, and if anybody else did see this working please do get in touch.

St. Agnes Station Site
Dennis Clarke

I passed the site of St Agnes station yesterday and have enclosed a few photos. The Planet loco is still on site, getting a bit weather beaten!

Many thanks Dennis - I wonder what sort of a state the shunter is in beneath the wooden cladding!

A trio of Western workings, all taken on Saturday, 18 September 1976.

I went down overnight on either the Manchester or Nottingham–Newquay service and pictured D1005 Western Venturer at Newquay on the 10:05 (S.O.) to Newcastle (1E22); D1041 Western Prince arriving at Par with the 07:30 Paddington–Penzance; and D1056 at Plymouth with the 10:56 (S.O.) Paddington–Newquay.

Quality not good, as I had a cheap Russian FED camera then, before the Pentax/Nikon days!
