Part 2
I've had a look at your latest installment of photos on the CRS Website during 1977, think I can identify some of the locos in the article. The class 50 next to the turntable at St. Blazey, 29/01/77 gives a clue (like the Westerns did), with its headcode box. As the use of four character box was being abolished at this time the box was set to give the loco's number minus one 0, so the fourth character is a 2 making it 5032 or 50032 "Courageous". The class 08 in the next image with a class 25 this is 08113, this being allocated to St. Blazey at the time.
The class 25's are much harder to identify because of the bodyshells. There were three variants of class 25, variant one and two having both the earlier and later style of cab ends. Early series one loco's initially had the communicating doors on the front end, but these were phased out to be replaced by just a bigger centre cab window. However later Darlington built loco's (25235 is definitely one), still had the earlier design because BR did not supply them with the modified diagrams and thus constructed as such. Other lower numbered locos however had already been built minus this feature, so without a clear shot of the numbers I can't help with these! Variant three class 25 all had the later front end but with some body side detail differences.
As a point of interest Darlington built class 37's were also built without receiving all the updated plans. The giveaway is the extra vertical straps on the upper body side cantrail grills, these are situated from No2 cab (electrical and boiler end), along to where the power unit sits. These straps are present on the pre-production EE loco's D6700 to D6705 but were not used on any other EE build, however these are present on all the Darlington examples. Ex St. Blazey allocated 37670 and 672 are examples
I saw the updated write up in the CRS website today regarding the class 25 next to 08113 as being 235, it's not this loco! I put that number in just as an example of a later build batch which had the earlier series one style body shell. I've done a search this afternoon, in early 1977 locally based class 25 with this type of body are either 25052, 223, 224, 225 or 227. Looking further at certain details of the loco, my money would be on it being 25052.
Your image at Redruth fascinated me with the Swindon class 120 DMU in consist of the parcels. I believe the same two 25's you photographed at Penzance, one being 25216, are the same two locos you captured at Redruth. Both loco's number 1 end (radiator), are facing towards London the same as in the Penzance image. The class 120 in consist is set P553: 51574 + 59284 + 51583.
Hope this helps to fill in some of the blanks in your archives, keep them coming Roger!
