An evening 'down West'

Locomotive 99001

My attention was caught by the colourful night time pictures from Guy Vincent of 99001 at Swindon in yesterday’s Latest Input (click here, scroll down), together with classmate 99002. I saw 99001 at The Greatest Gathering and it was very impressive close up in its striking livery.
Wikipedia records that the 99 Class produce an incredible 8270 hp in electric mode and a handy 2400hp from their Cummins diesel engine. It also states that:
"The chief executive of GBRf, John Smith, reports that the Class 99 will outperform the Class 66 at low speeds, despite having a less powerful diesel engine. The greater tractive effort means that the Class 99 on diesel power can deliver more power at the rail than the 66.”
