Re: Probus Viaduct
Paul Burkhalter
A question that maybe your Society could help with. Probus Viaduct, replaced in 1871 with an embankment, was the viaduct of wooden construction? Any other details regarding Probus Viaduct would be gratefully received. Obviously because of how long ago it was replaced, there is very little info available on it.
Today came the following answer from Paul Burkhalter:
The query today re the above is answered in John Binding’s book Brunels Cornish Viaducts (the font of knowledge on this subject). It was a class E timber structure, length 435ft, max height 43ft. Binding says he didn’t find a photograph of it before being replaced by the embankment after only 12 years in use. However there is a contemporary sketch on page 28 of the book.
