The above photo shows two short-formed HSTs at Bristol Temple Meads on Tuesday 10th September 2019.  On the left in platform 10, blue 43160 then named 'Sir Muir Lockhead OBE' heads the 2Y05 0748 to Taunton. Coaching stock is set LA21 with power car 43162 out of sight at the other end.  On the right, in platform 12, 43005 (partnered by 43191) heads set LA24 with the 5U08 0728 St Philips Marsh - Weston-super-Mare empties ready to form the 2U08 0841 Weston - Cardiff Central.

43160 later became 'Castle-an-Dinas' while 43005 carried the 'St Michael's Mount' Castle Class nameplates.  One of 43160's nameplates is included in a final batch of Castle 'plates being sold by GW Railwayana Auctions on 16-17 November with a starting bid of £3200 per plate (click here). Buyer's premium of 18% including sales tax will be added to the winning bid. Proceeds go to charity.

As of November 2024, power car 43160 is stored awaiting disposal at Laira, while 43005 was scrapped at Newport Docks in July 2023 - one of the first to go due to redundancy and old age.

For how many more years will construction site cranes feature in photos taken around Temple Meads?

Many thanks for another interesting piece, Guy. Many interesting nameplates for memorabilia on the website you reference - worth a look.

Many thanks Paul, thank goodness that people had the foresight to save some of these machines for future generations.

Many thanks David, a remarkably sharp and high quality photo given the lighting conditions.
