Trouble with the 'Sleeper'
Jon Hird, Mark Lynam, Roger Winnen & Andrew Triggs

On the morning of 28.05.2025, the down sleeper hauled by 57604 was declared a failure at Exeter St. Davids. The cause was reportedly a severe fuel leak.

The train was recovered to Laira by a GWR 'Castle Class' 2+4 HST, then in the late afternoon it emerged once again with 57604 seemingly back fighting-fit, before working ECS to Long Rock depot, Penzance.

A closer view of 57604 carrying its unique lined green GWR livery. The bogies appear excessively 'weathered' compared to the rest of the underframe - this is because they have been borrowed from 57605 (currently in Laira for overhaul), 57604's own bogies having not arrived back from the contracters in time to be fitted during its spell in Laira. 28.05.2025, copyright Roger Winnen.

Many thanks all - not only a daytime sleeper move, but in sunshine too!
