45118 (D67) at large!
Ian Thomas
It was indeed 1982 and, by then, the writing was on the wall for locomotive-hauled services, firstly on the NE/SW and then the MML. So it was time to act and get some photos.
The spring of 1982 left just a few weeks before the HST timetable stepped up to almost a full sweep from mid-May. I spent a couple of days in April on the lineside recording the final loco-hauled services, and I had an All-Line Rover for the last week in mid-May.
Saturday, May 15th, was the last day, and the overnight services ran with passenger accommodation on the previous night. No longer could I use the 19.37 Bristol-Newcastle, 1E38, the 20.00 Newcastle-Bristol 1V50, and the 01.10 Bristol-Leeds, all now TPO/vans only.
Note the van on the 07.00 Newcastle-Bristol, 1V75. Yes, it conveyed Motorail, as did the return, the 16.08 Bristol-Newcastle, 1E18, as did the up and down Leeds-Penzance-Leeds (former Cornishman), 1V71/1E21.
The pics of 45-118 on the real stomping ground, the MML, were taken at Tapton Junction and Market Harborough. Note the church of St Mary and All Saints at Chesterfield, a true landmark.
I was on a Midland Railtourer & East Midlands Rover that week, damn good value, and it covered Doncaster/Sheffield to Gloucester, the ECML to Peterborough, the MML to Bedford, and, of course, all in between.
The final picture of 45-118 was on the 13.33 Derby-Penzance relief on Maundy Thursday 1984.
Just for the record, my last journey behind the above locomotive was on Saturday, December 3rd, 1983. It was working the 14.23 York-Plymouth, 1V92, which my girlfriend Jill (now wife) and I took from Derby to Gloucester.
Happy days!
