A trip to Newquay in '82
Alan Peters

Some cine film stills taken in 1982, unfortunately I did not record the exact date.
Picture
Par with a HST arriving from Penzance no doubt bound for London Paddington, I would not have know that one day I would be a Driver based here! Copyright Alan Peters.
Picture
From the same shot the Newquay DMU awaits in the branch platform with a unidentified class 37 waiting for the HST to clear. Looking back I am glad to have worked mechanical DMU's on the Cornish Branches but unfortunately I took no pictures. Copyright Alan Peters.
Picture
We have now reached Goonbarrow Junction for the token exchange, can anyone identify the Driver and signalman as before my time. Copyright Alan Peters.
Picture
BR class 37, appears to be 37307 is seen at Goonbarrow Junction with a rake of clay hoods, taken from the Newquay bound DMU. Copyright Alan Peters.
Picture
The signalman waiting to exchange tokens at St Dennis Junction, swept away into history, it is ironic that a passing loop has been reinstated not far from here! Copyright Alan Peters.

The delightful view of St Dennis Junction in 1982, now covered by the A30 dual carriageway with a DMU bound for Newquay. Copyright Alan Peters.

Arrival at Newquay, the original Platform 1 before the station buildings were demolished, this platform has since been reinstated. Note the traditional Drivers leather bag, tea can and bardic lamp before the days of a Hi-viz backpack. Copyright Alan Peters.
What a great article, Alan - many thanks indeed.

Welcome back, 57605
Jon Hird

On a grey and grim Sunday afternoon, 57605 leads 57301 towards Largin Viaduct returning to Long Rock following a year-long overhaul at Laira. The locomotive failed with a serious bottom end engine failure whilst working the down sleeper on 16.01.2025 and was moved to Laira for an overhaul in February 2025. 08.03.2026, copyright Jon Hird.

Lord Oliver Brown charity day

Sam Ryder

The Plym Valley Railway held a charity day in aid of the Childrens Hospice South West on Sunday 08.03. Resident continental steam loco TKh 5374 worked the trains.

Many thanks indeed Sam, and well done to the Plym Valley and locomotive owners for supporting the CHSW.

More split boxes in the West
Roger Geach

Split box 37042 leads 37376 past Berkley with the 1100 Wooton Basset to Whatley empties 07.04.1997, back in the EWS days. I think these were working due to a shortage of class 60s at the time.

Class 37 were also more common working off Westbury in 1979 and the early 1980s when Bristol Bath road supplied pairs of Class 37s for stone trains.

These were not split boxes, but were normally from the Bath Road  allocated locos pool like 37203/208 etc.

I can't remember how long they lasted, as 56s were drafted in.

Many thanks Roger - I can't imagine many 'split box' locos received the EWS/EW&S livery?

A study of 37109

Here are some photos of 37109, in various colour schemes, all taken at Exeter.

Many thanks for digging these out for us Bill - a great selection.
