NINETEEN SIXTY FOUR – PART 95
Llangollen Part 2
Michael L. Roach

In Part 93 I visited Llangollen Station and took readers on a tour of this interesting station on the line from Barmouth to Ruabon, but didn't show any photos of trains in the station. So in this instalment I will show some photos of trains all taken at the time of our visit in 2010. We stayed just a mile north of the town up in the hills with a fine view to the east of Castell Dinas Bran, which dominates the town and the valley. In 2010 the heritage line was operating trains as far as Carrog 7¼ miles away. Work would start the following year on extending the line westwards and it opened to Corwen East in 2014 and to Corwen Central in 2023

It was withdrawn in July 1965 and was restored at Llangollen and returned to steam in 2009. Copyright Michael L. Roach.

More Split-box 37s on the Western
Guy Vincent

Some photos of Split-box class 37s on the Western region. Scans of four older b-w pictures I bought around 20 years ago from a good friend, Mike Ware of Bath. All the below photos were taken by Mike Ware and now in my collection. Tomorrow I’ll send a few colour images following the same theme.

Referring now to the passenger trains hauled by 37024 and 37058 in the summer of 1985.  I used to often spend Saturdays in Devon on one-day Devon Explorer tickets and travelled on both of these services. 1V32 1030 York~Penzance on 27th July was 6 mk1 coaches and was taken from Exeter (dep 1606) to Plymouth (arr 1716).  On 17th August 37058 had 9 mk 1 coaches and departed Taunton at 1544, arriving Plymouth at 1753. I remember there was a delay due to the train being stopped somewhere in the Wrangaton area by sheep on the line which the traincrew had to deal with before continuing forward.  Enjoyable times now much missed.

Split-box 37s that received EWS red and gold livery were 37040, 042, 051, 057 and 109.  37042 survives in very faded and weathered condition at the Eden Valley railway, Warcop, where it has been since 2011. 37057 is in service with Colas and 37109 is preserved and operational at the East Lancashire Railway, Bury, recently repainted in Trainload Metals livery.

Bad luck must have stuck with 37096 as it was one of the first 37s to be stored (summer 1989) and later withdrawn through wear and tear. Copyright Guy Vincent (original photographer Mike Ware).

Great stuff Guy, many thanks indeed for the photos and the info.

Many thanks to both Michaels. Some interesting little machines.
