Referring now to the passenger trains hauled by 37024 and 37058 in the summer of 1985. I used to often spend Saturdays in Devon on one-day Devon Explorer tickets and travelled on both of these services. 1V32 1030 York~Penzance on 27th July was 6 mk1 coaches and was taken from Exeter (dep 1606) to Plymouth (arr 1716). On 17th August 37058 had 9 mk 1 coaches and departed Taunton at 1544, arriving Plymouth at 1753. I remember there was a delay due to the train being stopped somewhere in the Wrangaton area by sheep on the line which the traincrew had to deal with before continuing forward. Enjoyable times now much missed.
Split-box 37s that received EWS red and gold livery were 37040, 042, 051, 057 and 109. 37042 survives in very faded and weathered condition at the Eden Valley railway, Warcop, where it has been since 2011. 37057 is in service with Colas and 37109 is preserved and operational at the East Lancashire Railway, Bury, recently repainted in Trainload Metals livery.
