Re: NMT coach 977993
Mick House

Joe Birchall asked the question about the ultraviolet coming from the roof of one of the NMT coaches, below are some details and an image that may help answer his question.

The coach that Joe Birchall was referring to on the HST New Measurement Train (NMT) is coach 977993, it is a Mark 3 Network Rail High Speed Track Recording Train coach and the ultraviolet array on top is a laser system that measures infrastructure, including bridges, tunnels, viaducts and overhead lines.

Underneath the coach is track condition monitoring equipment that measures and records various parameters of the track, including geometry, ballast condition, and rail profile, also fault detection such as voids in the ballast, track wear, and structural damage, It can measure various track parameters including rail top, cant gradient, twist, level and alignment, by identifying track faults early, the NMT helps prevent serious incidents like derailments by allowing engineers to plan repairs and maintenance.

It also has live video and recording equipment underneath and on the roof as well, all of this can be monitored at speeds of up to 125 mph, this is just part of what the NMT can do.

Very informative - many thanks, Mick.

43187 leads an Exeter - Penzance service west over Moorswater, with 43093 on the rear. The pillars of the original timber viaduct still stand proudly. It would have been quite a sight to see the two structures side-by-side in the brief time between construction of the current viaduct being completed and the original being dismantled. 30.05.2025, copyright Jon Hird.
