Hastings 'Thumper' DEMU - Cardiff Central 1997

Hastings DEMU 1001 arrives at Cardiff Central on the 15th March 1997 with the 08.24 Portsmouth - Cardiff Central for the Wales v England Five Nations rugby match in which the Welsh were beaten 13-34. 1997 was the year the full effects of privatisation of the railways was being felt and the TOCs were struggling to move huge amounts of people for special events. As a result all sorts of locos and rolling stock were chartered to run additionals as well as regular services where capacity was inadequate.
This vintage set coupled with 1013 will be visiting Paignton on the 20th June with a railtour from Hastings. The DEMU has had a busy month having recently completed a mammoth three day tour from Tonbridge to Inverness.
