Middleway Castle
Alan Peters

Picture
Looking very overgrown, Middleway crossing still retains its splendid bracket signal. A GWR castle class HST set worked the Newquay branch on 16th July 2024 and is seen approaching St Blazey with the 17:19 service from Newquay to Par. Copyright Alan Peters.
Many thanks Alan - it's been wonderful to see so many photographs of the Newquay 'Castle' trips, we've had a photo from almost every vantage point on the branch.

Blue unit to Newquay
Jon Hird

Picture
A quick shot of blue GWR unit 150238 on the Newquay shuttles, 17.07.2024. I would echo Alans comments above about the overgrowth, this was the only spot along this section of line I could find long enough to fit just a 2-coach train, even with an additional 30m of height. A far cry from the days 15-20 years ago when you could simply stand on the path and photograph the trains going by. Copyright Jon Hird.

Digby & Sowton - Monday 15th July 2024
David Tozer

Gents,

Reports of a possible use by GWR of a SWR Class 159 159014 working the 1151 Exeter to Exmouth. A hasty trip to Digby & Sowton only to find the train had been cancelled. However I did get a photo of GWR’s only true three car Class 158 158798 which was working the 1123 from Exmouth to Paignton.

Like other locations on or railway network vegetation is encroaching near the operating line. On my latest trip on the Exmouth Branch it felt like in places that we were travelling through a jungle. Recently I saw a video on You Tube that showed the Vale of Rheidol Railway has a rail mounted flail. Something our national network could learn from.

Many thanks Dave, not a station (or even the line itself) which we see featured in many recent photographs.

Many thanks Roger - another lovely shot.

'Sweet Caroline!'
Joseph Birchall

Dear Jon

Some photos from around this time last year when Caroline came down. These images show the inspection saloon plus the Class 37 coming up the 1 in 78 gradient between Truro and Probus.

Kind Regards
Joe
