After Wednesdays well-recorded issues with the sleeper (click here), it must have been a blow to GWR to experience further issues on Thursday. The loco for the 'up' working on Thursday evening - 57603 - had failed, meaning that instead, an IET worked the service to Paddington. The 'down' train still ran using sleeper stock, arriving into Cornwall as scheduled on Friday morning.
Of course, this meant that both sets of stock were here in the westcountry. 57602 was sent to take one set back to Reading, running as 5Z50.
