Snow day!

Looe direct line of 1935
Peter Murnaghan

Roger,

I am enjoying your series of photos of the pre-1908 route to St Germans and now you have expanded onto the 1935 proposed route of the Looe direct route from St Germans.
Picture
You might be interested in including my picture from 2021 of the road above the cliffs to the east of Millendreath.  As you know, this road was diverted inland to accommodate the proposed GWR luxury Hotel and golf course that was planned to be built near Bodigga.  This new, straightened road, between Windsworth and, what is now, Bay View caravan park was built in 1938 by Charles Symonds of Liskeard for the railway company.  It is unusual in two respects.  Firstly, it must be the only country lane in Cornwall with kerb edging along its length, which can be seen in my picture.  And it still has GWR concrete post and wire fencing in a number of places.  Although it is remote for railway enthusiasts to visit, the road can easily be navigated on Google Streetview, bearing the rather misleading name 'Looe Hill'.
Picture
In my view (above), the road abruptly turns right into today's caravan park, but it was intended to continue straight ahead down to the resort at Millandreath.  Today, that is just a narrow, steep footpath.

Best wishes,
Peter

Many thanks for your interest and for the additional information and photographs, Peter - an ambitious project for the time, I wonder which route would have survived the Beeching cuts, had there have been a choice?
