WESTERNS AT LARGE - 1976

This series will show various photos of the Class 52 'Westerns' in their penultimate year.. The quality is not the best, however - I had cheap Russian FED camera back then.

Van Trains

Cornwall was very much a county associated with the mail/van trains for many a year. In the 1970s we had the regular 4M05 1250 Penzance to Crewe vans which could load to several bogies.
The other service in daylight was 4A13 - times for this varied for departure, either 1522 or 1545 off Penzance to Paddington, which would be seen in the east of the county around 1700.
Here in later days we see 47630 with the 1215 Penzance to Paddington vans at Bolitho on 12.08.1992. Even this more recent picture was taken over 30 years ago.

Many thanks Roger. The mail trains really did add a nice splash of colour to the railways. Bolitho looking much clearer then than it does nowadays too.
