The Nick Perring Collection - Part 7
Railway calamities!
Clive Smith

Picture
Brush Tête-à-Tête. Like a scene from Thomas The Tank Engine, Big Brush 47445 attempts to muscle Little Brush 31259 off the track in the stabling point at Exeter St Davids on the 13th March 1986. So much has changed in this view in the period since it was taken nearly forty years ago . There is a lot going on in the view and much to take in. Nick took this photo from the new panel box. Copyright Clive Smith (original photographer Nick Perring).
Picture
Another calamity. 47269 is undecided which way to go at Hackney Yard in Newton Abbot in January 1982. This Haymarket allocated 47 was a long way from home and I expect the Scottish Region weren't too amused. Copyright Clive Smith (original photographer Nick Perring).
Tony Hill writes:

The pic of loco 47269 derailed in NA Hkny Yd is actually in N.Abbot New (Goods) yard, which was constructed alongside the Moreton Bch.

Many thanks, Tony.

31241 & 37299 with 31421 out of sight hauling the convoy at Newton Abbot in December 1981 on route from Laira to Exeter . I'm not sure how the 31 got pranged but it moved on from Exeter and was seen at Bristol for a while before moving on to Swindon in May 1982 where it was cut up. Copyright Clive Smith (original photographer Nick Perring).
Many thanks Clive - a great selection from Nick showing some unusual sights.

Great memories, Paul - many thanks for sharing them with us.

Mystery photos - can you help?
Guy Vincent

In a box of miscellaneous unidentified photos I have this image (attached) but no idea where it was taken. My first instinct is for North Devon eg Bideford and probably mid 1950s. The loco seems to be a 0-4-2-T type, number 187, again just a hunch it could be of LS&WR origin. I’m sure someone on CRS will know instantly, so we’ll see what turns up.

In the meantime I’ll keep looking out for mystery Westerns to identify, much easier!

Shunting at a mystery location in this photograph from Guy. Can you identify either loco or location? Copyright Guy Vincent.

Many thanks Guy. Can anybody help with a location? Please send us an email if you can - [email protected]

With thanks to Neil Phillips and Roy Hart we now know that these photographs were taken in Ireland - more info tomorrow.

Rail Replacement at Swindon
Ken Mumford

Just came back from spending time on Swindon station photographing the rail replacement business.

The only trains running to and from Swindon are the Cheltenham Spa -
Gloucester services roughly every hour today - Sunday.
