All quiet at Parkandillack
Jon Hird

Parkandillack has been 'mothballed' for the last few years now, with the only visits being made by the occasional Network Rail test train. Today with some fine weather I thought I would visit the site and capture some pictures.

It's always seemed mind boggling to me that the incinerator next door was never rail connected.  The £114m installation requires more fuel (rubbish) to run efficiently than Cornwall can produce, so out-of-county waste is ferried in daily by lorries.  At the time of its 'switch on' in 2017, as much as a third of its total fuel was being imported from outside of the area it was built to serve.

As for what the future holds - who knows? Visually, the track from Treviscoe appears to be in good condition.  Lithium would seem to be Imerys new 'baby' and a company called Cornish Lithium have reached an arrangement with Imerys to start test drilling in the nearby Trelavour Pit (click here for a document with more info on that). Perhaps the facility will be useful if that venture proves fruitful? We can but hope!

Another view from the South West. Visible is the farm track overbridge on which many enthusiasts have stood over the years pointing a camera at whatever St. Blazey have dispatched up the branch. 11.01.24, copyright Jon Hird.

Looking from the South West again, the end of the line (which once continued to St. Dennis Junction) is visible. The smaller buildings in the background form part of the site which it's rumoured may soon be occupied by Cornish Lithium. 11.01.24, copyright Jon Hird.

End of the line! A set of buffer stops hide in the vegetation at the end of the head shunt. This once continued to St. Dennis Junction. 11.01.24, copyright Jon Hird.
